The Summervale Series, page 32
Our new house.
I stared at the two glimmering rings nestled on my ring finger.
Dane and I married one year ago this week.
I feel like a bad wife. I have no idea what to do for our first wedding anniversary.
But knowing Dane, he won’t care for fancy things.
Sure, we have a massive home, and both drive expensive cars. We appreciate how far we have come and how hard we’ve had to work for those nice things.
Because there was a time not so long ago when it was almost ripped away from us.
Another email arrives in my inbox.
A little girl has gone missing in Salem, Massachusetts.
Did I mention I also run my own successful private investigation business?
Because of the press surrounding all the murders in Summervale, and my father, etc., as well as my highly publicised book deal about my experience growing about with a serial killer father, and seeing that I helped solve a few of his cold cases, people want me to do the same for them.
I was initially reluctant, but then I realised I was letting my skills go to waste.
Plus, the money is nice after growing up poor, with an abusive father, being hit and starved and locked in a closet.
I’m putting it to good use, of course.
As I said, Dane and I don’t splash our cash around.
We’ve set up a foundation for victims of crime and domestic violence to help needy children.
Stacey heads the foundation as the co-founder and head councillor.
Stacey and Ashton also live next door to us.
Ashton is a successful singer-songwriter and producer. They have a beach house here and a penthouse on the Upper East Side of New York. They’re about to welcome their second child in a few short weeks.
A light tapping sounded at my office door. I turned in my chair and saw my handsome husband standing there with a cup of coffee for me. I smiled as he brought it to me, pecking my lips.
“How’s the chapter going?”
“Yeah, good. I’m just about finished.” I hit save for the millionth time and turned around to face him as he sat on the side of my desk. I reached out and ran my fingers through his newly shaven hair, letting my fingers caress the neat pink scar on his forehead. The only evidence of his brain surgery a few months earlier.
“That’s good. I have good news.”
“Yeah?”
“They’ve offered me a coaching job at the local college.”
I gasped and jumped up to hug him, moving between his hips. I kissed him deeply.
“Congrats, baby. After the head injury and what happened two years ago, I was scared for you. Scared you’d never recover or play football again.”
“I know. Me too. But I think what we’ve been through has shaped us and made us stronger. It’s awful what we’ve been through, but without it, we wouldn’t be the people we are today. All of us.”
I smiled and lay my head against his chest.
“I couldn’t have said it better myself.”
bloodstains
BY ASHTON STRIKER
I’ll take you with me to the grave
Your kiss, your touch, your everything
Because you’re like a bloodstain
Impossible to get rid of
but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Your bloodstains on my clothes, on my bed, on my mind, on my soul.
I try and wash them away, the memory of you
It is impossible to erase.
Your bloodstains
