“Can I have everyone’s attention for a moment?” His voice cut gently through the chatter, eliciting soft murmurs as people turned toward him.

Nelly’s heart rate sped up. She looked at Kathy, who wore an expression that mixed excitement and curiosity.

“I know this might seem sudden.” Steve looked at Nelly with a gaze that felt all too intimate. “But life is unpredictable. It’s full of unexpected turns and sometimes difficult decisions. I’ve spent years wishing things had gone differently, wishing I had acted sooner.” He paused, clearly gathering his thoughts. “I realized I didn’t want to waste another minute without calling this amazing woman my wife. Nelly, you mean everything to me. Will you marry me?”

Time seemed to stand still as his words echoed in the room, a charged silence enveloping them, wrapping Nelly like a thick blanket. She could feel her heart racing in her chest, the air thick with emotion. Tears pricked at her eyes as she met Steve’s earnest gaze.

“Oh…” That was all she could muster, her mind racing between the reality of the moment and the heavy storm of memories.

Kathy’s eyes widened, and a grin broke across her face. “Mom, say yes! This is amazing!”

With the room filled with anticipation, Nelly felt a wave of emotion crashing over her—joy, fear, love—the whole spectrum of feelings swirling together. She had spent years pondering what might have been, and now, suddenly, it was right here, within reach.

Taking a shaky breath, she looked around at her friends, their faces filled with encouragement, and then back at Steve. “Yes,” she said, her voice barely a whisper as her heart thudded in her chest. “Yes! Yes, I’ll marry you!”

Cheers erupted around her, the room breaking into a joyful cacophony as Steve’s face lit up with a radiant smile. He stepped forward, enveloping her in a warm embrace that felt like coming home. Nelly melted into him, her heart racing with a blend of excitement and disbelief.

At the back of her mind, echoes of years gone by lingered; the choices she had made, the life she had lived, but now, they felt distant, almost like a faded photograph. A new chapter was waiting to be written, one filled with hope and love.

“Let’s celebrate!” Steve exclaimed, pulling back to look at her, his happiness infectious. He produced a small velvet box from his pocket, opening it to reveal a stunning ring—a simple yet elegant band adorned with a delicate gem that sparkled in the warm glow of the evening light.

Nelly gasped, overcome by the beauty of the ring. “It’s beautiful, Steve! But how did you know my size?”

“I may have done a little research,” he said playfully, a glint of mischief in his eyes. “Guess I couldn’t let this moment slip away without a little preparation.”

As her friends erupted in applause, Nelly slipped the ring onto her finger. It felt right, like a comforting embrace. She felt her heart swell with the possibilities ahead of her, anchored by the love that had managed to transcend time itself.

As the celebrations continued, music filling the air, laughter harmonizing with the clinking of glasses, Nelly marveled at how life had unfolded. In one day, old memories intertwined beautifully with the promise of a future she had scarcely dared hope for. She glanced at Kathy, who stood gleefully cheering her on, and then back at Steve, whose warm smile filled her with a sense of belonging.

The warmth and love of the evening solidified in her heart as they all raised their glasses in a toast to new beginnings. Wrapped in the arms of joy, Nelly felt a thrilling energy surging through her. Life, she realized at that moment, had a way of surprising her when she least expected it. She was ready—ready to embrace this new love and all the adventures that awaited them.

  Chapter Twenty-Three

The salty tang of the ocean breeze rustled through the air as Amy stepped out of the car, her heart fluttering with excitement. They had arrived at Oak Harbor, a picturesque town with charming shops and a stunning waterfront view. The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over everything it touched, and Amy couldn’t help but feel a sense of serenity enveloping her.

“Are you ready for this?” Gabriel asked, his voice laced with enthusiasm as he turned to face her. He was dressed casually in a fitted shirt and jeans, his dark hair slightly tousled by the wind. There was an unmistakable sparkle in his blue eyes, one that made her smile widen in response.

“Ready as I’ll ever be! What do you have planned?” she replied, grabbing her handbag and stepping around the car. A hint of mystery danced in his expression, and she wondered what he was hiding.

Gabriel grinned, reaching for her hand. “You’ll see! But first, let’s grab a few picnic supplies from the local market. It’s just down that way,” he said, pointing toward a quaint, awning-covered shop that burst with life.

“A picnic? You really know how to set the mood!” Amy said, her excitement bubbling over as they walked hand in hand toward the market. The possibility of a spontaneous adventure filled the air, and she could hardly contain her eagerness.

As they entered the market, they were greeted by the warm aromas of fresh bread, ripe fruit, and the subtle sweetness of pastries. Vibrant displays of local produce lined the shelves, and Amy’s mouth watered at the sight of ripe strawberries and plump peaches.

“Okay, what should we get?” Gabriel asked, raising an eyebrow playfully at Amy. “I vote for croissants. Everything’s better with flaky pastry, right?”

“Croissants sound divine! But we need something sweet and fruity too,” she replied, her eyes darting around the market, searching for inspiration. “What about some strawberries and a nice cheese?”

“Perfect! You read my mind!” He chuckled as he led her toward the fresh produce. He plucked a basket and began filling it with strawberries while Amy carefully selected a creamy brie from the cheese display.

“Can we also grab a couple of chocolate truffles from that counter?” She nodded toward the dotted display case nearby, filled with heavenly confections.

“You’re speaking my language,” he replied, a grin splitting his face. “We’ll need dessert to make this picnic complete.”

Together, they filled their basket with a selection of pastries, fruits, cheese, and, of course, indulgent chocolates. The shop owner rang them up, and soon, they were stepping back into the sunlight, their arms laden with goodies.

“Now, where to next?” Amy asked, her heart fluttering with anticipation.

Gabriel shifted his gaze toward the waterfront, eyes sparkling. “I have a little spot picked out just for us, not too far from here. It’s one of my favorite places.”

Hand in hand, they strolled along the boardwalk, laughter punctuating their easy conversation. Seagulls echoed above, and the gentle lapping of waves created a soothing melody. As they walked, the sun dipped lower, casting a warm glow across the water, transforming it into a shimmering blanket of gold.

Soon, they reached a quiet stretch of beach framed by swaying palm trees and soft sand. Nestled beneath one of the trees was an inviting blanket sprawled on the ground, adorned with an array of throw pillows that Gabriel had laid out earlier.

“Wow, this looks amazing!” Amy exclaimed, her eyes lighting up at the sight. “You’ve really outdone yourself.”

“I’m glad you think so. I wanted to make this special,” he replied, helping her settle onto the blanket before he plopped down beside her.

As they sat, Amy couldn’t help but soak in the beautiful surroundings—the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore, the golden rays reflecting on the water, and the gentle breeze playing in their hair.

“What’s the big news you mentioned? You sounded so mysterious back at the car,” she said, leaning against him, her heart thrumming with curiosity.

Gabriel took a deep breath, a broad smile breaking across his face. “Well, I’ve been keeping a little project under wraps for a while. You know that lot I visited a few months back? The one I was really excited about?”

“Of course! The one near the water?” Amy’s attention snapped to him, senses heightened.

“Yes! I’m thrilled to tell you that I completed the purchase.” He beamed, eyes sparkling with pride. “I have permits from the city council to start building a small community space. It will have a picnic area, gardens, and maybe even a little playground for families.”

“Gabriel, that’s incredible!” Amy exclaimed, genuine excitement spilling from her. “You’re really going to make that happen?”

“Yeah! I’ve been working with a landscape architect to design it, and there’s going to be a lovely seating area with a view of the water—just like this spot,” he said, gesturing around. “I envisioned it as a place where people can relax, picnic, and enjoy nature.”

“Wow, I can see it now!” She smiled, her heart swelling with admiration. “You’ve always wanted to create communities, and this is perfect!”

“I’m really excited,” he continued, his voice intensifying with passion. “I hope it can be a place where families gather, friends connect, and the spirit of the community thrives. I want it to reflect what truly matters—connection, joy, and belonging.”

Amy’s heart raced with enthusiasm, and at that moment, she felt a profound sense of pride for Gabriel. “You’re going to bring so much happiness to so many! This means everything. I really admire your heart and dedication.”

He turned to her, a gentle expression softening his features. “Thank you, Amy. That means a lot, especially coming from you. I want you to be a part of this project. I’d love to have your input on the design and what the space should feel like.”

“Of course! I would be honored. You know I love anything involving food and community!” She grinned, enthusiasm bubbling in her chest. “Just imagine all the picnics, art events, or even cooking classes we could host there!”

“Yes! I could see you leading cooking demos with the fresh produce from local farms,” he said, his eyes lighting up. “That would be amazing.”

“You’re making me giddy just thinking about it!” Amy replied, clapping her hands together, and the sheer joy of their conversation made the evening feel even more special.

“Let’s pop open a bottle of sparkling juice and celebrate this little milestone before we dig into our treasures,” Gabriel said, reaching into the basket. He produced a chilled bottle and uncapped it with a satisfying pop, pouring the bubbly liquid into two plastic cups.

“Celebrating, indeed!” Amy said, raising her glass to meet his. “To new beginnings and community!”

“To us and to making dreams a reality,” Gabriel replied, his eyes locking onto hers as they clinked their cups together, their laughter dissolving into the gentle evening ambiance.

They sipped their drinks under the golden sun, the world around them turning into a tapestry of sunset hues. As the sky transformed into shades of pink and orange, Amy took a moment to appreciate the beauty—the warmth of Gabriel’s presence beside her, the thrill of shared dreams, and the promise of what was to come.

After a bit of quiet contemplation, they dug into their picnic spread, nibbling on croissants, cheese, and sweet strawberries. Between bites, they exchanged stories, dreams, and laughter, the connection between them bound by warmth and understanding.

“So what’s your dream for the future?” Gabriel asked between bites of cheese, his expression suddenly serious.

Amy thought for a moment, realizing how much she had been reflecting on her own aspirations. “I’ve always had dreams of opening a bakery someday, a little place where people can gather not just for pastries but to create memories too.”

“Sounds incredible! You should totally go for it,” he encouraged, leaning closer, captivated. “You’d make it a wonderful place.”

With his support fueling her conviction, Amy continued, “I want it to be a welcoming space, with community classes on baking and occasional collaborations with local artists. Baking is such an intimate act, and I want to share that love with others.”

“That’s a beautiful vision,” Gabriel said, nodding thoughtfully. “And I can totally see you making that a reality—we both have dreams we want to chase.”

“Together, we can create spaces filled with passion and joy,” Amy replied, her heart swelling.

As the evening wore on, they continued to share hopes, dreams, and laughter until the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of twilight. Gabriel reached for Amy’s hand, entwining their fingers as they sat in comfortable silence, the soft sounds of waves harmonizing with the rustling of leaves.

At that moment, under the glowing sky, Amy felt a profound sense of belonging beside him, a spark igniting her determination to pursue her own dreams alongside his. The evening may have started with a picnic, but it had transformed into something deeper as their dreams intertwined amid the beauty of the world around them.

  Chapter Twenty-Four

The throaty howl of an approaching train sent a rush of anticipation coursing through Amy as she arrived at Portland’s Union Station. The air was crisp, infused with the mingling scents of freshly brewed coffee and pastries from nearby cafés. As she stepped off and glanced around, vibrant murals painted on the station walls jumped at her, filling the space with a sense of life and purpose.

Today was the day she would finally meet her sister, Fiona, for the first time. It had taken years—years filled with silence, uncertainty, and so many questions to find out she had a sister—but now here she was, ready to embrace the connection they both had craved for so long. Amy had never felt more apprehensive and excited at the same time.

Her heart raced as she pulled out her phone to check the time. She could feel the familiar nervous flutter in her stomach, a blend of excitement and unease. She ran a hand through her hair, mentally ticking through all the things she wanted to say, all the emotions she wanted to convey. She hoped this meeting would lay the groundwork for a lasting relationship, not just a fleeting moment in time.

And then, there was Fiona—a bright splash of vibrant energy in the crowd. Her vivid auburn hair perfectly framed her face, and although she wore a simple denim jacket over a sunny-yellow dress, something about her presence was radiant.

“Fiona!” Amy called, straining to pierce through the noise of the station.

Fiona’s head turned, and the moment their eyes met, her anxiety seemed to vanish. A smile broke across Fiona’s face as she darted toward Amy, and just before they reached each other, they both halted, a moment of disbelief hanging between them.

“Wow! You’re… so much taller than I expected!” Fiona exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

“And you’re so grown-up!” Amy replied, enveloping Fiona in a warm embrace. The moment felt electric, filled with the weight of everything unsaid and unshared. Finally breaking apart, Amy took a step back, her eyes searching Fiona’s, wanting to absorb everything about her sister—every nuance, every smile, every hint of their shared father in the contours of her face.

“I can’t believe we finally did this,” Fiona said breathlessly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “It feels unreal!”

“It does! But I’m so happy to finally meet you. Seriously, this has been way too long in the making,” Amy replied, her heart swelling with warmth as they walked together through the bustling station toward the exit.

“I mean, it’s hard to figure out how to connect when we had no idea either of us existed,” Fiona added, her playful nature shining through. As they left the station, the sun poured down on them, illuminating the vibrant streets of Portland.

Amy surveyed the city around her while Fiona animatedly pointed out various landmarks. “There’s the famous Powell’s bookstore! And over there, that’s where they have the best donuts in the world. We have to stop by later!” Fiona exclaimed, her enthusiasm infectious.

“This place is incredible!” Amy said, genuinely impressed. “You’ve got a good eye for spotting the best stuff. Where to next?”

“How about we grab some lunch and catch up?” Fiona suggested, her eyes sparkling with excitement. As they walked side by side, Amy felt a new rhythm forming between them, an easy flow that made her feel lighter.

They found a small café tucked between brick buildings, its outdoor tables buzzing with conversations and laughter. After ordering their food, they settled at a table for two, the warmth of the sun casting a cozy glow around them.

“Okay, I have to ask,” Amy said, leaning in slightly. “What’s been the best part about living here so far?”

Fiona considered the question, her brow furrowing for just a moment before her lips broke into a smile. “Honestly? It’s been great having my own space and being able to explore. There’s this whole world out here! But I miss Dad, you know? It’s been hard.”

Amy’s heart clenched. They hadn’t spoken much about him, but it felt like this was the moment to broach the subject they both felt lingering like a shadow between them. “I miss him too. Do you… do you remember anything about him?”

Fiona’s eyes shifted slightly, contemplation washing over her face. “He was a good man. Really kind… and he always told the best stories. I miss that most, I think. He had this way of making even the most boring things sound exciting.”

“Like what?” Amy asked, genuinely intrigued.

“Well, he would tell me about his childhood, like how he used to catch frogs with his friends at a creek out by the river,” Fiona smiled, lost momentarily in reminiscence. “And he said he was really scared the first time he tried to ride a bike, so he had to get a spare tire for the front.”

Amy leaned forward, drinking in every word. “What else? I’d love to hear more about him.”

Fiona swallowed, her smile fading slightly as they drifted into the bittersweet territory of remembrance. “He used to sing to me too. He had this terrible voice but would belt out songs from the radio when we were driving. I can almost hear him singing ‘Sweet Caroline’ like it was yesterday. It made me laugh so hard!”
