We giggle like the carefree kids we are as we make our way to the backyard. The playhouse, surrounded by lush greenery, stands like a magical fortress awaiting our attention.

“Behold, Sir Cade, the enchanted fort in need of our brave efforts!” Aria declares, striking a dramatic pose.

I play along, bowing theatrically. “Fear not, Lady Aria, for I am here to assist in this noble quest.”

And so, armed with broomsticks and imaginary shields, we dive into the “cleaning quest.” Aria leads the way, turning mundane tasks into epic battles against imaginary dust monsters. As we scrub and sweep, our laughter fills the air, blending with the rustling leaves and the distant sounds of the neighborhood.

In the midst of our playing, I accidentally knock over a bucket of water, creating a small puddle. Aria’s eyes widen, and she bursts into laughter.

“Well, Sir Cade, it seems our dragon has caused a small flood. No worries, though. We shall conquer this watery challenge!” she declares, grabbing a towel and joining me in our improvised cleanup.

As we work together to dry the puddle, I can’t help but appreciate Aria’s infectious positivity. The mishap becomes just another part of our grand adventure, and in that moment, I realize how fortunate I am to have her as a friend.

With the cleanup complete, we sit inside the playhouse, sharing imaginary tales of our dragon-fueled victory. The sun begins to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over our magical kingdom.

“Cade,” Aria says, her tone turning serious, “no matter what happens, whether we’re conquering imaginary challenges or facing real ones, I promise to be there for you. Friends forever, okay?”

I meet her gaze, feeling a profound connection that goes beyond the realms of childhood camaraderie. “Friends forever, Aria.”

As the day comes to an end, we leave the playhouse behind, our hearts filled with the magic of a friendship that weathered imaginary storms and real-life challenges.

  ***

I find myself smiling at the recollection of our school escapades—the paper airplane attacks, bake sales, and late-night conversations about dreams that seemed distant at the time. As the memories replay in my mind, I can’t help but feel a sense of happiness at the unexpected turn of events.

Coming back here after ten years away was never in my plans. The city has its allure, and I have built a life there that keeps me occupied. However, family obligations call me back from time to time—like my cousin’s impending wedding—to the town that holds pieces of my past.

I decide it’s time to pay a visit to my cousin, Joe, and his family, wanting to catch up and see how the wedding preparations are going. The familiar streets of Sweet Haven guide me towards their house, and a mix of nostalgia and anticipation fills the air.

As I approach the front door, memories of family gatherings flood my mind. It’s been three years since I last stepped foot in this place, and the excitement of seeing everyone again is palpable. The door swings open before I even have a chance to knock, and there stands Joe with a grin that mirrors mine.

“Cade! You’re finally here!” Joe exclaims, pulling me into a bear hug.

“It’s been too long, Joe. How’s everything going?” I reply, returning the hug.

He steps back, studying my face. “You look the same. How’s the city treating you, big shot?”

I chuckle, appreciating the familiar banter. “City life has its charms, but this will always be home. Where’s everyone? I was expecting a full house.”

Joe’s expression changes, a mix of excitement and hesitation. “Well, you’ll find out soon enough. Come on in.”

As I step into the house, I notice the telltale signs of wedding preparations—decorations, floral arrangements, and an air of anticipation. The living room is transformed into a hub of activity, and I can’t help but smile at the buzz of excitement.

“Surprise!” a familiar voice calls out, and I turn to see Rose walking up to Joe with a bright smile.

“Rose? You’re Joe’s fiancée?” I ask, genuinely surprised.

She laughs, nodding. “Guilty as charged. You didn’t know?”

“I’ve been out of the loop for a while, busy at work. Congratulations, you two!” I say, genuinely happy for them.

Joe claps me on the back. “Thanks, Cade. Rose is the one who keeps this ship sailing smoothly.”

Rose chuckles. “Speaking of ships, where’s the rest of the crew?” I ask, looking around.

Joe exchanges a quick glance with Rose before answering, “They’re out for a bit, giving us some space. Wedding planning and all that.”

I raise an eyebrow, curious. “Space? From family? I thought everyone would be here to welcome me.”

Rose smiles, sensing my confusion. “They wanted to give Joe and me some privacy. We’ve been in the thick of wedding preparations, and sometimes, it’s nice to have a quiet moment together.”

I nod, understanding their need for privacy during this hectic time. “Fair enough. So, how’s the wedding planning going?”

Rose’s eyes light up as she begins sharing the intricate details of the upcoming celebration. She talks about the venue, the color scheme, and the menu with infectious enthusiasm. Joe and I listen, occasionally chiming in with our thoughts and ideas.

As the conversation flows, I find myself genuinely enjoying their company. Rose’s vibrant energy complements Joe’s easy-going nature, creating a dynamic duo. The living room is filled with laughter and the shared excitement of planning a joyous occasion.

After a while, Joe glances at the clock. “Well, I hate to cut this short, but we have something very important to do. Would you like to join us?”

I consider the invitation, but realizing the importance of their wedding planning, I decline with a smile. “No, go ahead. I wouldn’t want to intrude on your alone time. I’ll catch up with everyone later.”

Rose gives me an appreciative smile. “Thanks, Cade. We’ll fill you in on all the details when we’re back.”

As they prepare to leave, I stand in the living room, taking in the familial warmth that envelops the space. Joe and Rose exchange a few whispered words, their shared glances revealing a deep connection that goes beyond words. I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia, a reminder of the familial bonds that shaped my childhood.

Before they head out, Joe claps me on the shoulder. “We’ll catch up later, Cade. Make yourself at home. There’s food in the kitchen.”

I nod, appreciating the gesture. “Thanks, Joe. I’ll see you guys later.”

As the front door closes behind them, I wander through the familiar halls of the house. Memories of family dinners, celebrations, and lazy afternoons flood my mind. The place feels both unchanged, and yet, subtly different.

In the kitchen, I find a note from Joe’s mom, my Aunt Martha, welcoming me and inviting me to help myself to the food. I grab a snack, settling into the comfort of the kitchen, and let my mind wander.

As I finish my snack, I decide it’s time to head out. I leave the house with a promise to return soon—eager to be part of the upcoming celebrations and witness the union of two people I hold dear.

As I make my way through the quiet streets, the soft glow of streetlights casting a warm glow, I realize how much has changed. The familiar landmarks and the scent of the night air evoke a sense of nostalgia.

I decide to take a detour and pass by Sweet Delights, Aria’s bakery.

As I approach the bakery, I see Aria through the window, attending to a customer. The genuine smile on her face as she interacts with them echoes the Aria I remember—warm, welcoming, and passionate about her craft.

The inviting aroma of freshly baked goods fills the air, and for a moment I’m transported back to our childhood. The memories of shared laughter and the camaraderie we once had linger, casting a bittersweet spell.

Deciding to make my presence known, I push open the door, and a chime signals my entry. Aria looks up with surprise flickering in her eyes before transforming into a warm smile.

“Cade, what brings you back here? Not stalking me, are you?” she teases, a playful glint in her eyes.

I chuckle, a sense of ease settling in. “Just passing through town. It has been a few years since I’ve been around. I guess I needed a taste of the simple life.”

She laughs, the sound echoing through the bakery. “Well, welcome to Sweet Delights. How are you, and can I get you anything?”

“Nothing for now. I have been busy, just left Joe and Rose to do more wedding planning. But being back feels...different.” I admit, my guard momentarily down.

Aria raises an eyebrow, studying me with curiosity. “Different how?”

I hesitate, not fully articulating the unexpected emotions that have surfaced. “I guess it’s the familiarity of it all. The city has its charm, but there’s something about this place that always feels like home.”

Aria nods, a knowing smile on her face. “Home has a way of pulling you back, doesn’t it?”

We share a moment of understanding, the unspoken connection bridging the gap between us. The conversation continues effortlessly as Aria updates me on Sweet Haven, sharing stories of the townsfolk, and I find myself immersed in the charm of our hometown.

As the afternoon progresses, Aria suggests grabbing a cup of coffee at a nearby café. We settle into a booth, the warmth of the café contrasting with the cool night outside.

“So, Cade, what brings you back—the wedding?” Aria inquires, sipping her coffee.

I lean back, a thoughtful expression on my face. “My cousin is getting married. It’s been three years since I last was home. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until tonight.”

Aria smiles, a glimmer of nostalgia in her eyes. “It’s funny how life brings us back to our roots, especially for special occasions.”

“Oh, and guess who forgot to tell me that Joe is getting married to Rose,” he asks, looking almost upset for not knowing.

“And who is that?” I ask sarcastically, knowing exactly who he’s talking about.

“You, it’s you. Why would you do that?”

“I don’t know, it didn’t come to my mind,” I say trying to cover up.

  “Don’t lie to me, Aria.”

“Okay, fine. Joe wanted you to find out for yourself, besides what’s the big deal?” I ask chuckling.

“Probably because I saw you two when I arrived, and you were both planning for my cousin’s wedding, and I didn’t even know she was his bride-to-be.”

“Okay…okay. You don’t have to be so sensitive about it, it was just a joke. I’m sorry, I should have told you. Are we good now?”

  “I guess so.”

Our conversation delves into the changes around town, the stories of people we both knew, and the shared memories that shaped our past. Despite the years of distance keeping us apart, the familiarity of our connection remains intact, and the evening unfolds into a series of laughs, shared secrets, and the acknowledgment of a bond that time can’t erase. We both have avoided the topic of my leaving a decade ago.

As the night draws to a close, I find myself reluctant to part ways. Aria, with her infectious laughter and genuine warmth, has unknowingly woven herself back into my life. I glance at my watch, realizing the late hour.

“Well, Aria, it’s been unexpected and enjoyable, but I should get going,” I say, a genuine smile playing on my lips.

She nods, a playful twinkle in her eyes. “Feel free to drop by Sweet Delights anytime. Not just for stalking me, okay?”

I laugh, standing up from the booth. “I’ll keep that in mind. Maybe I’ll even try those legendary chocolate chip cookies of yours.”

Aria grins, walking with me to the door. “You better. They’re still a hit around here.”

As I step back into the night, the memories of our reunion linger. The city may have shaped me, but Sweet Haven, with its simplicity and unexpected connections, has a way of grounding me. The unexpected joy of seeing Aria again has added a new layer to my homecoming, and as I navigate the familiar streets, I can’t help but wonder what other surprises await in this journey back to the roots of my past.

  Chapter three

  ARIA

My phone rings with the familiar chime of Rose’s ringtone, pulling me from the depths of sleep into the crisp reality of a Sweet Haven morning. I glance at the clock—it’s early. Too early for a call, I think as I answer with a raspy, “Hello?”

“Good morning, Aria! Rise and shine,” Rose’s cheerful voice greets me from the other end.

I squint at the sunlight filtering through my curtains. “Morning, Rose. What’s up?”

“There’s a family meeting at Joe’s house this afternoon, remember?” she reminds me.

I sit up, rubbing my eyes. “Right, the wedding stuff. What time is it?”

“Six, Joe and I thought it would be good for everyone to catch up before the rehearsals.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I mumble, already feeling the weight of the day settling in.

“Oh, and one more thing,” Rose adds with a playful tone. “Cade will be there, so put on something nice.”

I chuckle, the sleepiness dissipating. “Cade, huh? Why’s that?”

There’s a brief pause before Rose answers, her voice carrying a hint of mischief. “Well, he is the best man, and we wouldn’t want him thinking his hometown has lost its charm, would we?”

I laugh, appreciating Rose’s sense of humor. “I’ll see what I can do. Anything specific you have in mind?”

“Something that says, ‘I’m effortlessly fabulous but not trying too hard,’” she jokes.

I roll my eyes, still smiling. “Got it. I’ll channel my inner chic.”

“That’s the spirit! Can’t wait to see you. And, Aria, seriously, it’s good to have everyone in town. It’s like the gang’s getting back together.”

I feel a warmth in my chest at Rose’s words. “Yeah, it feels...familiar.”

  “See you soon, Aria.”

We exchange goodbyes, and as I end the call, I realize that the day is about to unfold with unexpected twists—a reunion of old friends, wedding preparations, and, of course, the inevitable presence of Cade.

Anyways I decide to have some more rest, seeing as the event is at six.

  ***

The evening sun paints the sky in hues of gold and pink as I make my way to Joe’s family’s house for the meet-up. Rose had asked me to be there on time, emphasizing the importance of my presence.

As I arrive, the familiar faces of friends and family greet me. Laughter echoes through the air, creating a lively atmosphere that belies the calmness of the morning. The men gather for their ritualistic talk about football, and true to Sweet Haven’s essence, beers are cracked open to welcome Cade back home.

I catch glimpses of Cade, blending seamlessly into the camaraderie with Joe and the others. A pang of nostalgia tugs at my heart, reminding me of the shared adventures and laughter that once defined our friendship. However, I push those sentiments aside, burying them beneath the façade of casual conversation and smiles.

Soon enough, Rose signals for me to join her and a group of girls off to the side. They exchange glances, and it becomes clear that they’re privy to something that pertains to me. The unspoken words hang in the air as I approach.

Rose, with her warm smile, takes the lead. “Aria, we’re so glad you could make it. Are you going to be okay to partner with Cade for the wedding.”

The words hang in the air, and I feel a knot forming in my stomach. I meet the eyes of the other girls, sensing their curiosity and concern. “Sure, Rose. I will be fine.”

As the men delve into discussions about football and life, I’m subtly guided away to a more secluded spot. Rose and the girls exchange knowing glances, and I can almost hear the unspoken words hovering between them. I brace myself for the conversation that is about to unfold.

“Listen, Aria,” Rose begins, her voice soft yet filled with concern, “we know Cade’s the best man, and we understand that you and he…well, there’s a history.”

My friends nod in agreement, their expressions a mix of empathy and curiosity. The words “he broke your heart” are uttered, hanging in the air like an unspoken truth. I take a deep breath, steadying myself for what’s to come.

“I appreciate your concern, really. But that was a long time ago. We were just kids, and things happen. Besides, I’m over it,” I say, trying to convince myself as much as I am reassuring them.

One of the girls, Emma, raises an eyebrow. “Are you sure about that, Aria? You two were inseparable back then. It must have been tough when he left.”

I force a smile, avoiding direct eye contact. “Life goes on. We all have our paths to follow.”

Another friend, Sarah, chimes in. “But being paired up with him for the wedding? Isn’t that reopening old wounds?”

I shrug nonchalantly, downplaying the significance. “It’s just a few days. We’re adults, and we can handle it.”

Rose places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Aria, we just want to make sure you’re okay. We care about you, and if you ever need to talk, we’re here.”

I appreciate their concern, but a part of me resents the scrutiny. “I’m fine, really. Let’s not make a big deal out of it. It’s been years, and I’ve moved on.”

The girls exchange glances, not entirely convinced. They leave, and I’m left alone with my thoughts swirling with a mix of emotions. As the men continue their animated discussions about football, I find myself stealing glances at Cade.

His laughter echoes through the air, triggering memories of the countless times we shared moments of joy. The thought of his hands guiding me up the aisle during rehearsals becomes a looming reality, and I can’t deny the impact it may have on my carefully constructed emotional walls.

As I turn to leave the family house after being reminded of my role in the wedding, Cade approaches me with a calm yet determined expression. He catches up to me just before I reach the door.

“Cade,” I say, a mix of surprise and uncertainty in my voice.
