CHAPTER ONE
Isobelle
The Bennett brothers had lured me to the secret state of Whitehaven under false pretenses. I was supposed to be studying a rare species of wolf, but instead, I was kidnapped by four smoking hot werewolves. The quadruplets were destined to share a mate . . . and fate had chosen me. They grew on me. One by one, they got me to fall for their charms, and in return, they kept me satisfied in and out of bed. They were unique in their quirks. Alex thrived on order and was a true dominant. Grayson was the dirty minded one and a Daddy Dom. Lucas was the strong silent type who had a passion for painting. Mason was a hopeless romantic who wrote music and read poetry. I forgave them for kidnapping me and decided to give these horndogs a chance. We were mated now, and it was love at first bite. They each shared a special night with me, making love to me into the early hours. They marked me, and now I was theirs. It should have been the start of something beautiful. Yet I’ve felt under the weather ever since?
This morning, my men accompanied me to the lagoon at Forest Hills to establish whether the water had been poisoned, or if there was another plausible explanation for why the animals were getting sick.
We witnessed an obscene number of stationary fish around the lake and knew right then it was serious. There were too many to count, and some had drifted at least 2.4 kilometers downstream. I remained at the waterfall with Mason and Lucas while Alex and Grayson left to investigate. The walk had worn me out, and my energy depleted as the day went by. Sweat soaked through my vest top, showing dark patches beneath my breasts and underarms. It was so damn hot; the muggy heat stifled me. Mason nagged me to finish the sandwich that Alex had packed for lunch, but I had to force myself to eat it.
Maybe I feel like shit because of the fluctuating climate.
Today was hotter than Satan’s asshole, but yesterday was cooler because there was a thunderstorm during the night, and it cleared the air.
Alex walked back along the trail beside the water’s edge. “We found fewer fish downstream,” he announced, thumbing behind him, “which suggests the root of the problem lies around here somewhere.”
I finished taking samples from the large body of water and stored them in a cooler box inside my backpack. There was no need for me to bother the rangers for blood samples because Grayson came back with a dead deer slumped across his shoulders.
“I come bearing gifts,” Grayson joked.
I wrinkled my nose. “Thanks . . . it’s just what I’ve always wanted.”
He set it down on the dirt path, and I was able to take the necessary blood samples. I swabbed around its mouth for good measure, hoping I could detect anything substantial. Lucas had shifted into his wolf form and dug out a big hole in the ground. Grayson rolled the deer into the hole, and Lucas buried it. Then he shifted back and put his clothes back on. He was filthy, and his fingernails were ingrained with soil.
“Have you got everything you need?” Lucas asked, all sweaty and streaked with earth.
“I think so,” I replied, taking one last glance around the lakeside.
“I don’t see any obvious discoloration in the water. I’ll need to compare the samples with the ones that Alex and Grayson collected downstream. Then I can see what we’re dealing with. Hopefully, it’ll confirm Alpha Alec’s theory about it being down to careless farmers dumping pesticides. I would hate to think hunters are the real culprits. That’s rather alarming,” I mentioned, fanning my face with my hand.
Ugh! I’m getting sick.
Hoping I could cool down quickly, I removed my jacket and tied it around my waist. Lucas offered to carry my backpack, and this time I let him. By the time we arrived back at the car, I was sweating profusely and trembling like a leaf. My eyelids drooped during the entire journey home.
Later that night, after we finished dinner, the boys left me to work in peace. Alex and Grayson discussed their plans to extend the cabin. Lucas clattered around in his shed. Mason relaxed on the porch, strumming away on his guitar. Hours passed, and the tests came back inconclusive. It wasn’t a pesticide that had contaminated the lagoon. It was a mystery. I didn’t know what had caused it, but it cast some doubt over a careless farmer being the cause. It was looking more likely that hunters were the cause. The rangers were going to have to secure the area until a thorough clean-up operation could begin. When I informed Alex of my findings, he made the necessary phone call to the leader of the bear clan. Grayson brought me a cup of sweet tea and placed it down on the side table beside me. I had given up working for the night and had sprawled across the sofa to watch the latest episode of Shifter Valley. I was so exhausted that I struggled to lift my head from the pillow.
“Thanks, love,” I said groggily.
Grayson cocked his head in observance. “Are you all right?” he asked with concern in his eyes.
“I’m shattered,” I admitted, needing to sleep it off.
“Why don’t you drink your tea, then get an early night?” he suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed, struggling to sit up.
The hot temperature felt like a shock to the system as my upper lip touched the tea. I was getting sick. My eyes were stinging. I finished my brew, crawled into bed, and fell asleep within seconds.
The following morning, I woke up feeling drained and irritable. I didn’t have a headache or a congested nose, but I felt as if I had swallowed a cactus and regurgitated it a few times. In moments like these, I would rub menthol and eucalyptus balm on my chest, make some honey and lemon tea, binge on throat lozenges, cocoon myself inside my blanket, and barricade myself inside my room for the rest of the day. But that was when I had a room to myself. Now I had to share my sleeping area with four muscle-bound giants. Those days of having personal space were now long behind me. Even if I painted a big red cross on the bedroom door as they did during the plague, I doubted my husbands would take the hint and leave me be. I felt like shit, and I looked worse for wear.
Dragging myself out of bed, I shuffled to the bathroom to do my business, then trudged into the kitchen to fetch a glass of water. The cold liquid caressed my throat, and as I gazed out through the window, all I could hear was the serene harmony of birdsong. Then, just like that, my moment of peace was shattered as the mattress creaked and an exaggerated sound of yawning came from the bedroom.
“Izzy? Isobelle!” the boys called out to me. “Izzy . . . Izzy . . . come back to bed!”
“No!” I replied, knowing they always felt amorous in the morning. I wasn’t feeling up to anything that involved sweating, panting, and exchanging bodily fluids. The urge to shout “have a wank” was oh so tempting. They didn’t seem to care that they each deposited a barrelful of cum inside me, leaving their balls empty and me to deal with the mess. And there was so much of it. I was destined to have a permanently chapped ass crack for the rest of my life.
A mixture of, “Ahh,” and “Oh, please,” chimed from the bedroom, and I rolled my eyes with an agitated huff.
“Oh, for God’s sake, lads. I need you to get up and take me to the pharmacy. I’m out of pain relievers.” Also, I had started my seven-day break from my pill and needed to purchase some tampons, but I didn’t want to shout that through the cabin. Any day now, Aunt Flo would drop by to visit me. It was just my luck to be struck down with a cold at the same time as my period was due.
The mattress creaked as they all rolled out of bed. Four enormous, half-naked m
Grayson scrubbed a hand over his outgrown stubble. “I need a trim, but I can’t be bothered to do it,” he muttered.
His long, wiry whiskers gave him a rugged appearance, and it made him look twice as sexy. I leaned in for a cuddle, kissing his lips, and felt the coarse texture spike my upper lip.
“Personally, I quite like it. But if you trust me, I’ll shave you later,” I offered. “Haircuts and shaves. Whatever you want. I’m not one to blow my trumpet, but I’m rather good at grooming,” I spoke to all of them, remembering the time I groomed my grandparents' Cocker Spaniel, Benji. My husbands didn’t have to know what I was going on about. It was a private joke that I kept to myself.
Grayson smirked and whispered in my ear. “I’ll let you shave me if I can shave you.” He bounced his gaze to my nether region.
I pulled him down for another kiss. “You’re so dirty, and I love it.” I grinned.
It would save me a chore if he kept his end of the bargain.
“You’re the only woman who stars in my filthy mind.” He shot me a flirty wink.
That acted like a stick of TNT, blowing my ovaries to smithereens. The temperature in the room became too hot to handle, boiling my pussy to combustion level. I needed to step outside and cool off. So, I nudged past Grayson and bolted through the cabin door.
“Izzy? Are you all right, babe?” Grayson called after me.
I didn’t shut the door; I left it ajar. Just enough for them to see me standing on the weathered decking, fanning my face like a baby bird trying to take flight.
“Boys, I’ll wait outside. It’s boiling in there,” I spoke, flustered. “If Peter Munroe hadn’t taken my rental car back, I could’ve gone by myself.”
It was such an inconvenience. I didn't want to rely on the boys to chauffeur me around. My independence meant a lot to me.
“Give us a couple of minutes to get ready, and we’ll take you,” Alex offered. “We want to spend the day together.”
I felt bad about snapping their heads off. It wasn’t their fault my immune system was taking a holiday.
“Okay,” I replied, softening my tone.
The chilly morning air provided me with a little respite from the itching and burning sensation. It felt like I had spent too long on a sunbed and baked myself to a crisp. My head felt heavy, and the forest danced in front of my eyes, zooming in and out of focus. Beads of sweat trickled down my brow. My lungs seemed to shrink, making it difficult for me to breathe.
What’s happening to me? I’ve never been so ill before in my life. Maybe this isn’t just a common cold . . . perhaps this is full-blown influenza.
I sat outside for a solid half hour before the boys came to join me.
“We’re ready,” Grayson announced, emerging through the door first. “Oh, you don’t look so good, babe.” He placed his palm against my forehead. “Alex! Izzy’s burning up!” Grayson exclaimed worriedly.
Alex rushed out and dropped to his knees beside me. “Babe, can you tell me what’s wrong?”
“I’m boiling. I feel like my body is on fire, and as soon as I kissed Grayson, I felt myself getting hotter and hotter down below,” I tried to explain as well as I could, but the more time that passed, the more intense the heat between my legs became.
“We’re going to take you to a doctor. Do you think you could manage a trip to town?” Alex asked, taking charge of the situation.
I nodded. “Yes, I think so.”
Mason carried me to Alex’s car. He'd parked it between Mason’s Mustang and Grayson’s Porsche. Lucas’s Harley seemed like the odd one out alongside the line-up of cars.
Lucas caught me side-eying it. “As soon as you’re feeling better, I’ll take you out for a spin,” he promised.
Alex held the door open so Mason could place me down on the back seat. Grayson and Lucas insisted they wanted to be the ones to look after me, which meant Mason had to sit in the front next to Alex.
Lucas stroked his fingers along my cheek as I leaned my head against his shoulder. “Are you all right, beautiful?” His gorgeous green eyes searched mine with a heady, lustful gaze.
That look alone compelled me to kiss him, tasting the mixture of coffee and toothpaste on his tongue.
“Love you,” I murmured against his lips.
I leaned over to kiss Grayson so as not to leave him out. His kisses were always sexy and intense, fanning the flames of my arousal. Jesus, the heat intensified to supernova levels, and my clit throbbed like a ticking time bomb. Both men massaged my inner thighs, sending a warm gush of juices into my underwear.
“Whoa! Do you smell how turned on she is?” Lucas mentioned in amazement. “Her pheromones are going crazy.”
“If you carry on doing that, I’m going to jump on the pair of you,” I threatened, getting sexually frustrated.
What was happening to me? In my head, the last thing I wanted to do was to have sex, but my pussy was purring like a sex-mad tigress.
Mason climbed into the passenger seat just as Alex settled into the driver’s side. “Kiss me.” I reached out to them desperately, feeling as if I would die without their touch.
It made no sense. I leaned forward between the seats and pulled Mason into a passionate kiss, then did the same to Alex. My sudden behavior changes completely threw both men off-guard.
This isn’t a normal fever.
“What’s happening to me?” I panted between gasps for air.
Alex frowned. “I’m not sure. I have a vague idea, but we’re going to get a second opinion.” He drove us out of the forest and into Lakewell. I was shivering violently by the time we arrived.
The second Alex parked the car, all four doors flung open, and the boys clambered out. My eyes rolled in their sockets, and then Lucas swept me up into his powerful arms.
“I’ll carry her. There’s no way that she can walk by herself,” Lucas mentioned to the other three as he carried me.
“We’re taking you to the medical center. Dr. Rayne is a Bear shifter, but with this town having a mixed shifter community, she treats all species, including humans,” Alex explained.
“Alex, her scent is getting stronger, and I’m feeling as if my blood is rushing down south if you know what I mean?” Lucas warned. His low rumbling growl vibrated through his throat as I buried my face into the crook of his neck.
“Lucas,” I managed a fragile whisper as my eyes rolled into the back of my skull.
“Hold on, baby, we’re almost there,” Lucas soothed, hastening his steps.
People stopped what they were doing to stare at us. Some voiced their disgust, airing their opinions for all to hear. At this moment, I was far too preoccupied to care. Grayson exchanged words with someone who had uttered a sly comment.
His temper had reached boiling point as he hissed, “Out of my way!” He and Alex charged forward to open the door to the hospital.
As soon as we were inside, Alex and Grayson made a beeline toward the reception desk and explained that this was an emergency. Lucas clung to me for dear life, and Mason scurried to get me a glass of cold water from the dispenser.
“Izzy, drink this, babe, you’re dehydrating,” Mason urged, pressing the plastic cup to my dry lips.
I gulped down the water. The ice-cold liquid soothed my fiery throat as I drained the cup in four large gulps. The fluorescent lights stung my eyes, and all I could do was bury my face against Lucas’s chest and whimper.
The surgery door burst open, and a stocky blonde emerged to see what was going on. “Is someone going to tell me what all this commotion is about?”
“Dr. Rayne! Please hurry. I’ll pay you anything to make her better!” Alex begged as soon as he saw the doctor emerge from the office.
