Cole’s breath caught in her throat. She could think of only one reason why Kain would call her.
She accepted the call, and a moment later, she could hear muffled voices in the background.
“I’m ready to make a deal,” Kain said without preamble.
Cole’s heart fluttered like a caged bird. “And you’ll tell me everything you know?”
“Every last detail. But first I need a deal in writing. No prison time, and I don’t tell you a thing until we’ve got that squared away.”
Cole took a slow breath as she stared back at her brother and father, who were talking together in low voices—about her, more than likely. Greg made a pleading gesture, as if he wanted Dad to be reasonable.
“We don’t need to discuss it over the phone,” she said. “I’ll come to you.”
“You do that. And I recommend you don’t drag your feet—I might start to forget things.”
And you might lose your deal, Cole thought, but she kept that to herself, not wishing to threaten him.
“Then I suggest you start writing it down,” she said. With that, she ended the call.
Greg and her father glanced up as she approached.
“Don’t tell me,” her dad said flatly. “You have to get going.”
She pressed her lips regretfully together. “I wish I could stay longer, but I—”
“Don’t give me that crap. You were looking for the first excuse to ditch us. Admit it.”
Cole paused, keeping her anger in check. “It’s about Kelly. There’s someone who might know what happened to her.”
Her father stared at her, speechless.
“Go on,” Greg said softly. “There’s no sense waiting—we’ve all been waiting far too long already.”
Cole nodded, grateful for his understanding. She met her father’s eyes once more, hoping they could at least find common ground in this one tragedy, even if in nothing else.
Her father gave her a slow, thoughtful nod. It was as close to a blessing as she was going to get.
Cole turned away and began to fish her car keys from her pocket. She had only gone a few paces when Greg’s voice reached her.
“And Sis?”
She turned around.
“As soon as you know something …” he said, trailing off.
She nodded. “You’ll know.”
He pursed his lips together. “Thank you.”
Cole retreated to her vehicle. As she opened the door of her Jeep, she glanced once more at her brother and father, who sat in silence at the table as if stunned by her words. A cadre of pigeons patrolled close by, looking hesitant to get too close.
Just as Cole was about to turn away, Greg looked up, and their eyes met.
He smiled, the expression equal parts sad and hopeful.
Cole smiled back.
Then she climbed into her vehicle and drove off to make a deal with the devil—a deal that very well might help her find out the truth about what had happened to her missing sister.
