Chapter One: Creatively Inclined
Julie and I have been given two tickets to an adult themed escape room in the city, and we are excited to go. Though we have not been involved in more than a couple of other escape rooms, my wife and I are confident of our ability to make it through to win the entire game. It doesn’t matter whether we have teammates or not.
“I hope they are nice people,” Julie says to me as we walk into the building where the escape room is located. “The last time we did this the other people there were real jerks.”
I smile as I watch my wife’s face light up as she recalls the last time we were a part of an escape room. Her beautiful blue-green eyes and soft blonde hair put back into a sexy ponytail causes my heart to race a little as I think about how attractive she is when she seethes.
“They will be nice,” I tell her. “Remember, your friends said they paid two hundred dollars for the tickets in total. This is not a cheap escape room experience like the couple we have been to so far, baby.”
Julie turns to look at me just before we walk into the building. “I hope you’re right, Blake.”
We open the front door and walk into the building before being directed by a sign in the foyer to take the elevator to the eighth floor. The ride is quick and easy before we find ourselves standing in front of double doors that lead into a large conference room. Julie and I walk into the room and are greeted by the person who will serve as the game master tonight.
“Hello and welcome to Gordon’s Escape Rooms. I’m Lacey.” A young woman reaches out and hands us each a brochure-sized piece of paper with rules and other things printed upon it.
“Blake and Julie,” I reply as I point toward my wife.
“It’s so nice to meet you! Just have a seat while we wait for one more couple and then we will get started.” The woman continues to smile widely as we make our way to chairs that are marked with our names already.
“Hello,” Julie says to the other couple nearby. “I’m Julie.” She reaches out to shake their hands.
“Dana. This is my husband Zane.”
“Happy to make your acquaintance,” Zane says with a smile. He takes my wife’s hand and cradles it gently inside his in a way that causes a smidgen of jealousy on my part as I watch the two of them. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like there could be something there between the two of them as they shake for a bit too long for my liking.
“Thank you. Same here,” Julie replies as she blushes a little.
Zane is an attractive man, tall and athletic looking, his dark hair and eyes complimenting his olive colored skin quite well. My wife is a sucker for guys who have a darker complexion that I do, and that has sometimes caused her to make comments to me about my reluctance to tan more than I do. Though she might find that something attractive, my father has been diagnosed twice with skin cancer due to the effects of the sun on his skin as a farmer. So, I don’t tan on purpose at all.
“Hello,” I say to his wife as I take her hand to shake it. She smiles back at me and I get the sense she sees me as an attractive man. Of course, this boosts my ego greatly as I hold her hand a bit longer just as her husband did with my wife.
“So, do you do these things often?” Zane asks us as we have a seat nearby.
“Just twice,” Julie tells him before I can respond. “Not the best experience so far, but we’ve heard this one is better.”
“Oh, it’s much better,” the game master says from the side. “You will find that we offer a unique experience here at Gordon’s Escape Rooms.” She smiles before turning her attention back to the door of the conference room. “I believe the third and final couple is arriving just now.”
We all watch as two more people walk into the room. “Hey,” the man says to the rest of us.
“Welcome to Gordon’s Escape Rooms. I am Lacey and I will be tonight’s game master.”
“Ah. Good to meet you, Lacey.” The man, muscular and carrying the air of a football coach, takes and squeezes her hand confidently. “I’m Shaun, and this is my little lady, Elaine.”
“Hello to the both of you,” Lacey says as she goes from the man to the woman to shake their hands. “Please, have a seat and we’ll begin.”
“Great!” Shaun sits down beside me and offers his hand. “And you are?”
“Blake,” I reply while shaking his hand. Making note of his firm grip, I change my mind and decide he must be a car salesman of some sort. Of course, I’ve known a couple of former coaches who became car salesmen later in life.
Those around the table finish introducing themselves and the game master gets started. “As you know, I’m Lacey. What you might not know, is what an experience with Gordon’s Escape Rooms is truly like. Let me begin by telling you that your safety is our top priority, so if you ever feel too uncomfortable, we will gladly release you from the room and then out of the building.”
“We wouldn’t be able to finish the rooms, then?” Dana, Zane’s wife, asks.
Lacey shakes her head. “I’m afraid not. You see, we have a very strict policy concerning quitters. Once you quit a room, you are finished. You will also not be allowed to return to Gordon’s Escape Rooms in the future.”
“What? Are you serious?” Julie appears irritated by the policy as Lacey has laid it out to us.
“I’m very serious, yes. You see, in order to maintain the highest level of adult-themed entertainment, we must make certain that only those with the willingness to play the games and solve the riddles will attempt the rooms.”
“And, what if we fail?” Shaun asks. “Will that get us banned as well?”
“Not exactly,” Lacey replies. “However, you might be politely asked to not return if your failure occurred because you refused to take part in a challenge.”
“That’s intense, but I like it,” Shaun chuckles. “If there’s a real cost to the games, it makes them more fun.”
“That has been our thoughts exactly over the last three years since founding Gordon’s Escape Rooms,” the young woman replies. “You see, the more you are willing to sacrifice, the better you will do in each room. It’s honestly a very fun way to spend your evening together.”
“And it has to be couples?” I ask. “It said that on the tickets, anyway.”
“That is correct. Couples only and no children. We are strictly an adult-themed operation.”
Zane clears his throat. “Does that mean you allow something sexual to happen in a room?”
“No sex,” she replies quickly. “Do not engage in intercourse of any kind.” Lacey shakes her head. “That’s a silly question, if I do say so myself.”
“Well, you keep saying it’s adult-themed, so it makes sense to wonder, right?” Shaun grins mischievously at the young woman standing before us. He must be a coach who became a car salesman. At this point, I would probably bet my life on it.
“Of course, adult-themed can mean a variety of things. For example, there could be words or phrases in puzzles or riddles that are not appropriate for minors. We might also have pictures of nude individuals in some of the puzzles you are asked to work. These things make the experience adult-themed and very much out of order for those under eighteen years of age.” Lacey looks at us and continues, “There could be challenges that are difficult. Keep in mind, you are all in the room together and the point is for all six of you to move to the next room. Do not leave anyone behind.”
Shaun turns to Dana and tells her, “Don’t worry. I’ll be there for you.” He winks at her, which causes his wife Elaine to playfully smack his chest with her hand. Zane looks at the other man in a way that makes me wonder if the two men will soon be in a physical confrontation with each other.
“You must all be there for each other.” Lacey looks at all of us. “You will have thirty minutes in each room and if you fail the time limit, all of you will be out of the game. Do you all understand the instructions so far?” I nod my head as do the others seated nearby. “Good.” The game master
“Wait, we have to put our cell phones and wallets in there?” Zane asks while frowning.
“Everything, yes. The only things you will be allowed to have with you is your clothing.”
“Geez, at least we won’t be stripped naked,” Shaun laughs loudly.
“Not yet, anyway,” Lacey comments with a smile.
We all do as we are asked, our wallets, cell phones, purses, and even watches and jewelry are put into the basket. Lacey picks up the basket once we have finished and puts it into a large lock box nearby. After closing the lid, she places a padlock on the box to keep the contents safe.
“Once we have gone into the first room, the only way out is to forfeit the challenges in the rooms. You will be removed and the others will be left behind. If at any time more than three people request to leave in total, the event is over and you will all be sent out of the building. Are there any questions?”
“I have one,” my wife says to her. “What if we need to go to the bathroom?”
Lacey nods her head and smiles. “That’s a great question. I’ll answer it in two parts. First, you will have an opportunity to use the restroom in a few minutes before we begin. Number two, there are five-gallon buckets in each room with toilet paper. If you have to go desperately, you might ask your teammates to allow you the opportunity. Though, the rooms are not all that well ventilated.”
“That’s disgusting,” Elaine says to her.
“It is, certainly, but it allows us to give you the option to stay in the room instead of being removed altogether.” Lacey looks around at all of us. “Any other questions?” She waits for a moment before saying, “Good. So, the restrooms are down the hallway. You have ten minutes to meet me at elevator doors where I will be waiting for you. If you are late, you are out.” She allows an odd giggle to pass her lips before turning and leaving the conference room.
“Holy shit, I think she’s serious,” Shaun says to his wife.
“Yeah, she’s serious,” Zane replies. “And I’ll bet one of us will end up needing to go to the bathroom while we’re in there.”
“Let’s hope not,” Julie says while grimacing. “Everybody get to the bathroom and take care of your business now.”
“Amen to that.” Shaun winks at my wife before he leaves the room with Elaine.
“That guy gives me the creeps,” Julie tells me as we follow just behind him and the other couple.
“Yeah, I might pop him in the nose before this night is over.”
“Don’t do that,” she pleads with me. “You’ll get us arrested.”
“Not you. Just me,” I chuckle. Taking Julie’s hand into mine, we walk to the restrooms and go in for one last reprieve before we are locked into the first room. My stomach is already rolling over as I think about what could happen while inside there in a few minutes.
Chapter Two: The Shirts Off Our Backs
Our game master takes us into the first room and locks the door behind us. A shiver makes its way down my spine and along both arms. This is becoming very real suddenly, and I feel almost as if we are in fact in grave danger. Though I know better, the dim lighting and eerie music in the background together give an ambiance of dread throughout the medium sized room. There is a candle that has been lit sitting in the middle of the room on an old wooden table, a paper just underneath it. Lacey nods toward it and begins to speak.
“In this room, ladies and gentlemen, is a riddle. It is that riddle that holds the answer to what must be done in order to move from here to the next room through that doorway.” She nods her head toward a second door on the other end of the room. “Should you either fail to solve the riddle or refuse to do as it directs you to do, there will be no going past this room. Think carefully as you read it and then decide what you must do.” Lacey moves away from us to one corner of the room. She becomes quiet as she waits for us to go to the table and read the riddle for ourselves.
Dana gently pulls the typewritten note from underneath the candle and begins to read it to the rest of us. “I am at the top of it all, though also in the pits. I can bear thoughts that some might find offensive, yet holey I might be. Six of me are needed for your freedom.”
“What the fuck does that mean?” Shaun questions as he looks back at Lacey. She doesn’t answer him, but continues to smile as she observes the confused looks on our faces.
“We need to look at this piece by piece,” Julie says as she takes the paper from Dana. “What is it that is on top but also in the pits?”
“Air?” Elaine posits. “It’s the highest thing on Earth and then it goes into the deep pits in the ground, right?”
“That sounds like a lead,” Zane replies.
“Yeah, but how can you have six airs?” My mind has been affixed on the final part of the riddle mostly as the others have been looking at the first part.
“That doesn’t make sense, huh?” Elaine admits. “So, it’s probably not air.”
“There are six of us,” I tell the rest of them. “Is it talking about us?”
We think for a moment as a couple of us wander around the room to look at the walls. Zane discovers a pull out box in the wall beside the door we need to open. “Maybe whatever it is that we need to use goes in here?”
“I think you’re probably right,” his wife agrees. “But what is it?”
“It says that it can bear thoughts that are offensive, but it’s holy. Something about the Pope?” Shaun says while looking at the rest of us.
“Not holy as in religion, I don’t think,” Julie replies. “It’s spelled h-o-l-e-y.”
“As in whatever it is, it can have holes in it,” says Dana.
“Something about it can be offensive, but it can also be holey. Dammit. That makes no sense.” Shaun again looks over at Lacey. “Can you give us a hint?”
