Arbogast seemed unharmed. Gutwound assumed the bloodstains were from the enemy Spider.

"So you got 'em," grunted Gutwound. It seemed a fitting payback.

The Spider lowered a segmented leg, and with unexpected strength, unusual in a creature from a light gravity world, hauled Gutwound to the top of the crest with him.

"They killed the Ancient Mariner," said Gutwound. "They killed the ghost. He's gone."

But he knew the silent Arachnid, without his translation box, could not hear him. He made the hand-semaphore signs for hull blowout and no survivors.

The Spider cocked his head, bringing first one set of eye clusters to bear on Gutwound, then the other. Or perhaps he was inspecting the cave. It was impossible to say. But something must have satisfied the huge creature, for he gave the all-clear sign.

Then the Spider gave the hand sign for dust-off. He deposited Gutwound on his back, and belly-slid away across the glacier, moving rapidly.

Darkness swallowed the two white figures in the white land. The faint hiss of the Spider's movement skating away across the snow dwindled in the distance.

  What Next?

Is bold Special Agent Athos dead? Does the vendetta of the Ancient Mariner die with him?

What strange power meddles with the Senate votes? How can Nightshadow grapple with a foe more shadowy and unseen than he?

Why does the Fixer bring the sinister power of the Underworld to bear against our Merry Catburglar?

What of Lirazel? She is shorn of hope, but will the memory of her murdered parents let her rest?

  Where is Arcadia?

  BLOODSHED! INTRIGUE! MYSTERIES AND WONDERS!

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John C. Wright is a retired attorney, newspaperman and newspaper editor, who was only once on the lam and forced to hide from the police who did not admire his newspaper.

In 1984, he graduated from St. John's College in Annapolis, home of the "great books" program. In 1987, he graduated from the college and William and Mary's Law School (going from the third oldest to the second oldest school in continuous use in the United States), and was admitted to the practice of law in three jurisdictions (New York, May 1989; Maryland December 1990; D.C. January 1994). his law practice was unsuccessful enough to drive him into bankruptcy soon thereafter. his stint as a newspaperman for the St. Mary's Today was more rewarding spiritually, but, alas, also a failure financially. He presently works (successfully) as a writer in Virginia, where he lives in fairy-tale-like happiness with his wife, the authoress L. Jagi Lamplighter, and their three children: Orville, Wilbur, and Just Wright.

It was a time when one man – Galen Dwyn – would find his destiny – and his heart – and lead humanity forward.

Dragon Award Finalist Richard Paolinelli explores the 4th Age of John C. Wright’s Starquest Universe in a series of thrilling sci-fi adventures. Come and explore this corner of humanity’s journey today!
