The daughter of Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Conrad Aiken, the late Joan Aiken started writing at the age of five. During her lifetime she published over one hundred books for children and adults. She received an MBE from the Queen for her services to Children’s Literature, and is well known for her Jane Austen continuations as well as the three novels of the Paget family—The Smile of the Stranger, The Weeping Ash, and The Girl from Paris—intricate, spell-binding novels of romance, adventure, and suspense.
