Five for Silver (Black Crow Chronicles Book 5), page 15
As soon as we got back to Zander's office, Falcor grabbed Nick and Me, shifting us away to the airport. No luck on Falcor taking us all the way home. He shifted back again and returned, holding Jax. Jax really needed a shower and some clean clothes, but he didn't complain.
Luckily, we were right on time for a flight leaving Las Vegas and heading for home that I hadn't realized anyone had booked us on. But it was First Class, which was a vast improvement over our previous flight.
I went through security and reached down for my knife, planning to take it off and pack it in the one bag of luggage that Falcor magically made appear. "Oh shit," I said when I pulled the empty sheath off my belt.
Nick glanced back and saw what I was holding. "Did you drop it somewhere?"
"I don't think so. I had it when I talked to the wraith, and I'm sure I secured it back in the sheath. "Oh, no! We have to go back!"
Falcor looked at me like I had lost my mind. "Why?"
"An old lady stole my blade. Probably the witch!"
Nick grabbed our bag, and we ran to the quiet corner that Falcor had brought us to when we shifted in. In a moment, we were back in Zander's office.
"Lockdown the facility!" I shouted.
Zander pressed a button on his desk, and the same lights and sirens that had gone off when I broke out of my prison cell went off. "What's wrong?" Zander asked.
"Someone stole my knife. An old woman."
"We'll find her," Zander said. "Do you know when it happened?"
"Just before we left, I was in the hall outside the conference room."
Zander typed some things into the computer, and the hall came up on the screen. It looked like me talking to myself. "That was the wraith," I said, pointing to the place where the wraith was. "Eric Holland's father."
We watched as I put my blade back into its sheath and then turned away just as the witch shifted into view. I saw her grab the blade and tuck it inside her coat, then as soon as I turned around, she shifted away again.
"She's gone," I whispered. "And she took my necromancer abilities with her." I couldn't even cut my skin without the knife. My skin refused to allow even a drop of blood out with anything but that knife.
"Shit. We'll find her," Nick said. But we both knew she could be halfway around the world by now. It had been over an hour according to the time stamp on the recording.
I shook my head. "She's gone."
