The Pastor’s wife, Abigail, suddenly stood, slid down her pew, and blatantly walked out of the service, in front of the whole congregation.

Everyone turned to look as she sauntered up through the aisle and out of the church, shaking her wild red hair as she walked.

The Pastor behaved as if it weren’t happening, just went along with his sermon.

“But love is the answer only when we know what it truly is, and how we are to live it. Let us all pray for guidance together, so that the power of real love will keep us from faltering.”

Every head bowed in silence and then the choir got up and sang. More prayers were offered, and the services were done.

Coffee and cake was served at the reception in the lobby. People milled about speaking to one another, polite to both Megan and Kyle. Angela didn’t leave Peter’s side and Megan’s mother didn’t say hello to Hunter, when Megan introduced them. None of it mattered to Megan, though she did wonder where the Pastor’s wife had gone off to, and if she would be all right.

After the reception was over and everyone gone, Megan stayed out on the steps of the church beside Hunter, talking. Then, she suddenly remembered she’d left something on her seat inside the church. She walked back into the church to get it. When she couldn’t find it, Megan walked in a little further, towards the back alcove. As she turned the corner to the alcove, she was suddenly frozen to her spot.

The teenager, Holly, had stayed behind and was standing there, close beside the Pastor. Other than that the entire church was empty and still.

  Megan stood, unseen and confused.

“It’s okay, Holly, they’re all gone,” she heard the Pastor say, as he turned to the young woman and opened his arms.

She flew into them like a lost bird as they embraced for a long, long time.

Chills ran up and down Megan’s entire body. She was frightened. This was something she never should have seen. She turned to leave, go back to the lobby, but couldn’t move.
