Lily smiled. It was a phrase Dexter had first told her when she was five, and a little joke they shared. A promise from Dexter that he would reveal everything, soon.
“Come, Bulldog,” Dexter called, and the dog dutifully walked beside him. Lily patted Bulldog’s head a few times, and Bulldog preened at the attention.
“Someone’s happy,” Theo laughed as they strolled into the forest. The injuries he’d sustained over the last few days wouldn’t heal soon. But the blood staining the bandage had stopped growing, so that was good.
Bulldog growled at Theo, and trotted to Lily’s other side.
Dexter laughed. “Not happy with Theo, I guess.”
They might have been in the midst of a nightmare, in the midst of a killing game orchestrated by Jack Spencer.
But they were all alive, willing to take on the catastrophes life would throw at them next. The troubles the EMP’s fallout would thrust their way.
“Ready?” Dexter asked Lily as they crossed into the heart of the forest, where black, swaying trees lined their view in the dark.
“It’s gonna be an adventure,” Lily said, though she was subdued, reserved. The aftershocks of her capture thrummed through her voice.
Dexter would protect her. Despite the EMP and Jack’s gang and thugs that might intercept them in the forest. Despite the emotional tornadoes whipping through his mind.
Protecting Lily was his mother’s final wish. And Dexter would fulfil it. To the very end.
