Whipped, page 30
“Not so fast,” Lady said with a laugh.
“I just made your favorite food for dinner last weekend, Tiff. Come on, let me through.” Cheyenne tried to appeal to her sympathy.
Lady laughed. “And I’ve got my mom making you that brisket you love next weekend. Derby is derby, baby.”
While Cheyenne was trapped, Erica lapped them three times, picking up a ton of points before she called off the jam.
Cheyenne cursed as she dried the sweat on her face with the bottom of her shirt. Before letting herself get mad, she remembered there was still plenty of game left to play.
“I told you to get low. Tiff is going to get you that way every single time. Don’t be predictable,” Erica said as they lined up to start the next jam.
Cheyenne knew she was right, but she glared at her anyway. Chuckling, Erica shrugged.
When the referee blew the whistle, music suddenly filled the converted warehouse. In near perfect unison, the Hells and Losers spun around to face Erica and Cheyenne. It was like the beginning of a flash mob.
After a beat, she recognized the song echoing throughout the cavernous space. It was what Erica always played when she wanted to slow dance with her in the kitchen. At the realization, Cheyenne’s already pounding heart jolted.
Both teams dropped to one knee at once just as Erica’s parents slipped into the room followed by Cheyenne’s mother.
Mom? What the hell?
Confused, Cheyenne turned to her side to look at Erica.
She wasn’t where she expected her to be. Instead of towering over her, Erica was on her knee too.
Oh, shit.
It couldn’t be what she thought it was. Erica couldn’t possibly have pulled something like this off without her knowing. Apart from their individual team practices, they were inseparable. When would she have time to orchestrate the kind of over-the-top display Cheyenne loved in bad
romance movies? Running in from the sideline, Anwar bolted toward them and slipped something into Erica’s hand before taking a knee with the rest of the team members.
“Cheyenne,” Erica started, her usually steady voice trembling. “I love you more than I thought anyone could possibly love another person. You’re my light. My heart.”
When her voice cracked, Cheyenne dropped to her knees too. Taking the hand that wasn’t holding a jewelry box, Cheyenne couldn’t let Erica do all the talking. “I love you too.
So much.”
Erica smiled as she flicked open the box, revealing the emerald engagement ring inside. “You’re already my better half,” she said, her eyes watering. “Do you want to make it official?”
Cheyenne’s head spun as her heart tried its best to break free from her chest. “Yes,” she replied, but she could barely speak. “Yes, yes,” she repeated more loudly before tackling Erica in a hug and dropping her to the floor to kiss her.
The crowd lost its collective mind, and within seconds, Hells and Losers were landing on top of them, crushing them under a dog pile of love.
“Congratulations to Sandra Day O’Clobber and Eva Destruction!” Anwar shouted over the ref’s microphone. “This is going to be the start of an amazing marriage! What roller derby has brought together, may no clown tear asunder.”
When their friends rolled off them, Erica slipped the ring onto her finger and kissed her as they lay on the floor. “I’ll spend the rest of my life being the best version of myself for you.”
Crying, Cheyenne found it impossible to speak. She’d never been happier in her life. All she could do was hold Erica tight and hope she understood just how excited she was for the new chapter in their life.
