Pushing down the residual fear, he distracted himself by thinking about the previous day. Now how was he going to get past those hunter insects? He began mulling over his actions. It was the first time he had managed to outrun the hunters. His new shape, akin to a cat with six legs, had proven useful. But the lack of arms had meant he could only bite. With only four legs, he wouldn't outrun them, but no hands didn't work either. In the end, he had been unable to face the wall-crawler and was devoured. The simple energy-core that held his consciousness hurled back into the depths of the lower regions to reform into the lowest possible life form.

The last vestiges of the dream faded, returning to the darkest recesses of his mind, and he promised himself that today would be different. Steeling himself against what was to come, he moved towards the exit and shoved the rock out of the way with a grin. Should he perhaps put it back this time and save Victor the hassle?

  About the author

  J. Carrarn is a forty-two-year-old husband and father of one who lives in the Netherlands. Most of the day, he sits behind a computer, solving software problems. For over thirty years, he has been spending his free time reading whatever fantasy and sci-fi he could get his hands on, from Tolkien to Dan Simons’ Hyperion. If he wasn’t reading, he was playing fantasy and sci-fi games. Nowadays, the time he doesn’t read or write books, he spends with his wife and son, cooks Italian food, or DM's half a dozen D&D groups.
