She checked the pockets of the jeans she was about to throw into the washing machine and felt something hard. She reached inside and gasped. It was a stunning bracelet, simple yet different from anything she’d ever seen, and made of the same green stone she saw inside the Denisovan caves. Jenny studied the unique piece of jewelry in reverence. Naneyu must have slipped into her pocket before he disappeared. Once again, Jenny felt the warm tears slowly move down her cheeks. She gently stroked the smooth surface. Farewell, sweet boy. And please, be safe.

Her phone buzzed, and Jenny jumped. It was Brian. They were in touch during her trip to Russia, but she never told him why she went. Instead, he was fed the same story about the research she supposedly did in Samarkand. It wasn’t that she deliberately wanted to lie to Brian. Jenny thought that if she told him the truth, he would come, and that would put one more person close to her in danger.

“Hey, are you buried in some old, dusty papers you brought from Uzbekistan?”

Hearing Brian’s voice brought Jenny back to reality. “Sort of. Why?” She wiped her tears with a sleeve.

“Over the summer, I did some climbing in the Andes and, quite by accident, stumbled upon something strange. It looks like an old puzzle, and I think it might be right in your alley. So, what would you say about leaving those dusty archives for a while and taking a little trip to South America?”
