Murmurs of wholehearted agreement sounded around the table. Shelby smiled gratefully at their acknowledgements. Though her developing intuitive powers still mystified her much of the time, she was gradually learning to trust in their subtle guidance without putting up resistance.
As the hour grew late, the party wound down reluctantly with profuse thanks given and accepted for Shelby's role in keeping Mr. Peacock from harm. Promises were made to meet again soon in the new year for more good food and fellowship.
Soon the only guest remaining was Travis who insisted on staying behind to help clean up. Working in tandem, they quickly restored order to the apartment's kitchen and living room.
With everything clean and put away, they sank onto the sofa beside the softly glowing fireplace. Harper immediately hopped up onto Shelby's lap and settled in, kneading contentedly as Shelby gently stroked her fur.
She turned to face Travis, the flickering firelight playing over his handsome features. "I'm so glad you came tonight," she said softly.
Travis's dark eyes were tender as he gazed back at her. "I wouldn't have missed it for the world. After everything that’s happened recently, it was really good to see you happy and relaxed."
He hesitated, then continued in a low voice. "I'm happy to be counted as one of your friends."
Shelby's breath caught at the vulnerability she heard in his words. "You definitely are," she whispered.
Electricity arced between them, but neither one was ready to make the first move.
Wanting to break the tension between them, Shelby smiled and asked, “Want to watch a Christmas movie?”
Travis chuckled. “Yeah, I do, but is there a Christmas movie that has a crime in it?”
Shaking her head, Shelby asked, “Don’t you get enough of crime in your daily life?”
Travis shrugged. “I like crime shows.”
As the fire cast its warm, rosy glow over the room, snow flurries swirled past the frosted windows. With a purring Harper resting on her lap and Travis sitting next to her, Shelby let out a deep, contented sigh. She unconsciously reached for the gemstone on her necklace and rubbed it between her thumb and index finger. She couldn't have imagined a better ending to the tumultuous events of the past weeks.
The holidays could be a magical season and Shelby knew she had been blessed with the best gifts of all - family, her bookstore, Lucy, Harper, her friends, and a few newfound talents. It was more than she’d ever dared to dream.
Out of the corner of her eye, she took a quick peek at Travis, and a rush of warmth spread through her.
She couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.
