“Close the gate, Marionette.” Her other hand sought his, fingers lacing, knitting together, and his knot popped into place within her. Her back arched, her climax nearly levitating her off the table as he emptied within her, filling her with heat. He groaned in pleasure, a deep, guttural moan, and her control over the light broke. The world went white, white and gold and filled with fire, fire that filled her and light that poured out of her, a veil of golden white that dropped over the house, the grounds, the lane, her mind, and she shook until the fire had consumed her, burning her to ash until the world she knew was gone.
She was never going to leave this place or these books, was never going to leave her strange husband. Her heart had been treated cruelly, and she’d been wise enough to know that no man would ever be able to heal it. She’d never considered, even with all of her book knowledge and librarian skills, that there had been love and magic still in the world, and she never would have found it; had never heard it singing … until she’d married a beast. His hands tightened over hers as the veil around them sealed; sealed that world of men out, sealed them in, safe and secure for the rest of time.
