Robert Hawkins
Date: December 5, 2007
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Fatalities: 8
On December 5, 2007, 19-year-old Robert Hawkins entered the Von Maur department store in Omaha, Nebraska and rode the elevator up to the third floor. Stepping out of the elevator with an AKM semi-automatic rifle, he started firing, killing eight store customers before killing himself. A suicide note found at his home stated his intention to “become famous” and to “take a few pieces of shit with me.”
George Jo Hennard
Date: October 16, 1991
Location: Killeen, Texas
Fatalities: 23
The Luby's massacre was a mass killing that took place on October 16, 1991, in Killeen, Texas. George Hennard, the handsome son of a local doctor, crashed his pickup through the front window of Luby's Cafeteria, then got out of the vehicle and began casually executing the restaurant patrons as they cowered on the floor. Twenty-three customers were shot to death before Hennard turned the gun on himself. It remained the deadliest shooting rampage in American history until the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.
Victor Ernest Hoffman
Date: August 15, 1967
Location: Saskatchewan, Canada
Fatalities: 9
The “Shell Lake Murders” were a series of shootings carried out by 21-year-old mental patient Victor Hoffman in Saskatchewan, Canada. On August 15, 1967, just three weeks after being released from a mental hospital, Hoffman arrived at the Peterson farm armed with a 22-calibre Browning pump-action repeater rifle. He proceeded to shoot all members of the Peterson family, including seven children, at close range. Only 4-year-old Phyllis Peterson survived the massacre, apparently because Hoffman thought she had “the face of an angel.” Hoffman was found “not guilty by reason of insanity” at his ensuing trial. He was committed to a mental institution where he died in May 2004.
James Eagan Holmes
Date: July 20, 2012
Location: Aurora, Colorado
Fatalities: 12
A Ph.D. student in neuroscience at the University of Colorado, James Holmes’ life began to unravel in 2012 when he dropped out of college and was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. On July 20, 2012, he entered the Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado during a late night screening of “Batman Returns.” He was carrying a Glock 22 pistol and a Remington Model 870 shotgun, which he used to open fire on moviegoers, killing 12 people. Holmes was subsequently found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Adam Lanza
Date: December 14, 2012
Location: Newtown, Connecticut
Fatalities: 27
The massacre carried out by Adam Lanza at Sandy Hook Elementary School is the deadliest school shooting in US history. On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Lanza murdered his mother at home before stealing her car and driving to the school, where he had briefly been a student. He opened fire with three semi-automatic weapons, cutting down twenty students and six staff members. As first responders arrived at the scene, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
Michael McLendon
Date: March 10, 2009
Location: Geneva County, Alabama
Fatalities: 10
Michael McLendon's killing spree began on March 10, 2009, when he shot his mother and burned down her house in Kinston, Alabama. He then drove to a relative’s home where he gunned down several members of his family as well as a neighbor and her daughter. Fleeing the scene, McLendon murdered a pedestrian in a drive-by shooting, then stopped at a gas station and killed a customer. By the time police arrived, Michael McLendon was gone. He was next spotted on Highway 52, heading towards Geneva, Alabama, firing indiscriminately at passing cars, claiming one more victim. Police finally ran him to ground at a Geneva metal works, where he had once been employed. McLendon died in the ensuing shootout.
James Edward Pough
Date: June 17-18, 1990
Location: Jacksonville, Florida
Fatalities: 12
A man with a history of violent behavior, James Pough became enraged when his 1988 Pontiac was repossessed by the finance company. At around 10:45 am on June 18, 1990, he entered the offices of the General Motors Acceptance Corporation in Jacksonville, Florida. Armed with a M1 Carbine and a .38-caliber revolver, Pough began firing immediately, killing a customer who was standing at the reception desk. He then began executing employees as they tried to hide. Ten people died before Pough committed suicide with his revolver. It later emerged that he had carried out two more murders the night before, gunning down a prostitute and her pimp.
Christopher Bryan Speight
Date: January 19, 2010
Location: Spout Spring, Virginia
Fatalities: 8
Angry at family members who he believed were trying to steal the farmhouse that his mother had left him in her will, Christopher Speight addressed his frustrations with a high-powered rifle, gunning down eight people. Those killed included his sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew. The other victims were friends of the family. When police arrived at the scene, Speight opened fire at them and also shot at a police helicopter. He was eventually captured after more than 100 officers surrounded his house. Deemed incompetent to stand trial, he was confined to a psychiatric facility.
Robert Stewart
Date: March 29, 2009
Location: Carthage, North Carolina
Fatalities: 8
After Robert Stewart’s marriage broke down, he swore revenge on his estranged wife. On March 29, 2009, he arrived at the Pinelake Health and Rehab nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina, where she worked as a nurse. Armed with a shotgun and a pistol, he entered the home and began firing, killing a nurse and seven elderly patients. His wife, the main target of his killing spree, escaped unhurt. Stewart was shot and killed during a gunfight with responding police officers.
Omar Thornton
Date: August 3, 2010
Location: Manchester, Connecticut
Fatalities: 8
On August 3, 2010, Omar Thornton was called in for a disciplinary hearing at his place of work, Hartford Distributors. Omar had been caught on surveillance camera stealing beer from his employers. He was asked to resign and signed the necessary papers and then left. However, instead of vacating the building, Thornton drew two Ruger SR9 semi-automatic pistols that he’d carried in inside his lunch box. He then started firing wildly, killing eight of his former co-workers. Thornton then phoned police and said he’d carried out the massacre due to racism in the workplace. After hanging up the phone, he committed suicide.
Joseph Wesbecker
Date: September 14, 1989
Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Fatalities: 8
Another workplace shooting took place in Louisville, Kentucky on September 14, 1989. Disgruntled employee Joseph Wesbecker entered the premises of the Standard Gravure printing works, armed to the teeth with an AK-47, two Mac-10s and two pistols. He opened fire on co-workers, killing eight and injuring 12, before committing suicide. Wesbecker was later described by colleagues as paranoid and argumentative. He’d often talked about shooting his bosses but nobody took him seriously.
Jeffrey Weise
Date: March 21, 2005
Location: Red Lake, Minnesota,
Fatalities: 9
Jeffrey Weise was a 16-year-old student at Red Lake High School on the Native American reservation at Red Lake, Minnesota. Obsessed with guns and with a movie about a school shooting, Wiese acted out his own tragic drama on March 21, 2005. After killing his grandfather and his grandfather’s girlfriend at home, he arrived at the school armed with a shotgun and two handguns. A teacher, a security guard and five students were killed in the spree before Wiese took his own life.
Jiverly Antares Wong
Date: April 3, 2009
Location: Binghamton, New York
Fatalities: 13
An immigrant from Vietnam, Jiverly Antares Wong acquired American citizenship in 1995. But over the years he develop strong anti-American sentiments, culminating in his carrying out a massacre at the American Civic Association immigration center in Binghamton, New York on April 3, 2009. Thirteen people died after Wong opened fire with two handguns. Four more were injured before the shooter took his own life, committing suicide with a bullet to the head.
