Champagne Problems (A Cross Security Investigation Book 4), page 29
“You’re sure?”
“That’s what Tessa Gold said in a statement she provided. Unlike O’Neal, she had no problem turning on Steed. She said he was behind everything, that he manipulated her into helping, that she never wanted to have anything to do with any of it, but he forced her into it.”
“Do you think that’s true?”
“No. O’Neal gave her an envelope full of cash. That was meant to be a signing bonus to encourage her to go after the big fish at Spark. Since O’Neal was banned, Gold had to do it herself, but she needed a little encouragement.”
“A preview of the kind of money she stood to make if she could pull it off,” Darrow said.
“Pretty much.”
Darrow cocked his head to the side. “Axel Kincaid is another of your clients. Was that a freebie, or does he get billed for the assistance you provided?”
“It was a favor.”
“Which he’ll repay.”
“How do you know I wasn’t repaying him?”
Darrow shrugged. “You don’t extort clients, but you trade in favors. That makes sense.”
“Y’know what, I changed my mind. I don’t want you anywhere near my business.”
“But you already made me an offer.”
“That wasn’t an offer.”
“It sounded like an offer.”
“It wasn’t.”
“I think it was.” Darrow grinned. “Face it. You’re going to give in because you’re afraid I have something that can bury you.”
“You’ve got it wrong. You should be afraid I plan on burying you.” I winked at him. “Just FYI, I wasn’t kidding about that shovel.”
