My head found its usual comfy home in Jay’s lap. He stroked an affectionate thumb across my brow, and a sun-blessed palm caressed my cheek before soft lips landed on mine, delivering the sweetest of kisses, each one as exquisite a joy as the very first. I dreamily gazed up at him. My darling Jay, my dear husband, my very, very best of men. The generous sweeping bow of his wide mouth, so familiar to me, curled into the most tender and most loving of smiles.

“We’ve done all right, haven’t we, Luce?”

As the curtain of night dropped, the garden birds were always the last to fall silent. They were a talkative bunch. A bossy nuthatch usually insisted on having the last word unless the barn owls were on the prowl, softly reminding the others to exit the stage. Soon, Jay and I would also slip away to return to our children and guests. Boisterous celebrations would continue well into the night and well into next year too if the estate cricketers had anything to do with it. But for now, we stole a precious moment alone, and with an imaginary glass, I raised a silent toast. This one is for you, dear brother.

“Yes,” I replied. I reached up for another kiss. “Yes, my darling. We most certainly have.”

  Acknowledgements

Thank you to so many of you who have read and enjoyed the Rossingley series, and I hope you enjoy this instalment just as much. In addition, I’d like to thank my publisher, NineStar Press, and above all, my editor, Elizabetta, for her endless patience and encouragement.

  About Fearne Hill

Fearne Hill lives deep in the southern British countryside, a stone’s throw away from the private country estate providing her inspiration for Rossingley. She looks after varying numbers of hens, a few tortoises, and a beautiful cocker spaniel.

When she is not overseeing her small menagerie, she enjoys writing contemporary romantic fiction. And when she is not doing either of those things, she works as an anaesthesiologist.
