“I got dance lessons for the two of you,” she continued.

I thought Jake was going to burst a blood vessel. “Dance lessons? Mom, are you kidding me?”

“No, I’m not kidding. They’ll teach you how to dance properly at the party together.”

“This isn’t a wedding. It’s not even an engagement party.”

“It should be,” was her opinion on that.

“Do you want to take dance classes?” Jake asked me. It was obvious he wanted me to say no.

Which made him an idiot. Did he really think I was going to tell his mother no? Or that I would pass up the opportunity to see him trying to find his rhythm? It would be like watching a grizzly bear trying to do the box step.

  “I’m in.”

He made a sound of exasperation. “I do have news,” he said, sounding exactly like a child telling on a sibling. “Bailey’s mom is dating Uncle Tony.”

  Oh, yeah. Total child.

“What?” His mother looked scandalized. “But she’s still married legally! And I swear, men always move on so fast after they lose their wife.”

“Karen died ten years ago,” his father pointed out.

“Hush,” was her response to that. “I bet Karen would be devastated.”

“Do you want Bailey to ask her?” Jake said. “She sees ghosts.”

  His mother crossed herself.

  I glared at Jake.

“No kidding?” his father said. “Can you ask Uncle Ted what he did with that five grand he borrowed from me? No sign of it in his will.”

  “Dad.” Jake sighed.

“The last check you write should be to the undertaker,” I said. “And it should bounce. Irish proverb.”
