“Meet Azalea.” I smiled.
“Your hair is so pretty!” Hailey squealed as she stroked Azalea’s ponytail.
“Holy shit, your muscles!” Blair groaned. “You need to show me how you got them.”
“Oh, and that ass,” Nikita said. “I definitely need to join you in the gym one day. I’m weirdly tempted to bounce a coin off it…”
“Your ass is already perfect,” I told my mountain lion omega as I gave her a kiss on the lips.
“Nice tits, too,” Arielle giggled. “They’re my weak spot.”
“My statement still stands,” I snickered. “There’s nothing wrong with your tits.”
“We’re going to have so much fun together,” Azalea chuckled.
“Hey, Jesse?” Kristina suddenly called out as she walked around the side of the house. “Your phone’s ringing.”
“Who is it?” I asked. “If it’s not important, then just ignore it.”
“You might want to answer it,” she said with a knowing look. “It’s Jessica Henderson.”
“I’ll be right back,” I said to my omegas as I ran toward Kristina.
Why was Hazel Wise phoning me at this time of night?
It must have been at least midnight, perhaps even later than that, and Hazel never phoned me this late.
Not unless it was an emergency.
I thanked Kristina with a smile as I accepted the call and held the phone against my ear. “Hello?”
“H-Hi,” Hazel said nervously.
“What’s wrong?” I asked as panic began to set in.
“I… I don’t know…” Hazel mumbled. “Something strange is going on.”
Hazel also wasn’t one to openly show her fear unless it was something serious.
“Take a deep breath,” I said soothingly. “I can tell you’re pretty worked up over this. Now, tell me what’s happened.”
“I couldn’t sleep, so I decided to get some work done,” she explained. “I’m still waiting on a new case, but I thought I’d familiarize myself with the files, just in case my boss gave me some work to do. And… I decided to take a look at your file while I was logged on…”
“Uh-huh…” I mumbled.
“I…” Hazel paused to take a deep breath. “I don’t know what the hell is going on, but your file literally just changed on the system. Like, someone updated it an hour ago. It says you just… killed off a new threat?”
Hazel didn’t say a flock of avians, and she didn’t say Reuben’s name, so I was grateful for that.
But I certainly wasn’t grateful for the information she told me.
My army and I were literally still in the process of cleaning blood off our hands, yet the SDD already knew about me killing off Reuben’s flock?
It had always taken a couple of weeks before the files were changed, not a couple of hours.
“What the fuck is going on?” I asked as I rubbed my forehead with one hand. “Those events happened this evening. I’m still there now.”
“Really?” Hazel gasped. “I thought it might have been last night or something, which was already confusing enough.”
“His corpse is still fucking warm,” I growled. “How the hell does someone know about this?”
“I don’t know,” Hazel said sadly. “But this is really worrying me now. It’s simply not possible.”
“Well, it clearly is possible,” I sighed. “There’s obviously something going on here. And I think it’s bigger than either of us first imagined.”
This phone call was proof enough that the SDD was doing something sheisty when it came to me, and now I was even more certain that Reuben Dillard had been working with the agency for whatever reason.
I didn’t know what they were up to, or why they were doing it, but I was determined to find out.
I was going to get to the bottom of things.
The SDD had better start running for cover, because when someone fucked with me, I didn’t leave any motherfuckers alive.
