“I can’t imagine leaving everything up to others,” I said. “Especially the big stuff. I don’t know, I just couldn’t live with myself if I wasn’t involved. It’s my job to ensure a stable, peaceful, and prosperous world for all my subjects. It’s a big responsibility, and I don’t take it lightly.”
“I know you don’t,” Helena murmured. “It’s a quality that really sets you apart, and if you continue to rule this way, you will be remembered as one of the Eternal Realm’s most beloved monarchs.”
I didn’t quite know what to say to that, so I just raised Helena’s hand to my lips and kissed the back of her knuckles.
“I don’t want to make assumptions about what our relationship may be now,” Helena said, and though her tone was almost timid, her eyes were bold. “I am willing to be satisfied with whatever role you wish me to play in your life, but I do intend to continue acting as a representative.”
“I wouldn’t accept anything less than that,” I assured her, and then I smirked. “But I certainly would prefer a whole lot more than just that.”
“I would prefer more as well,” Helena giggled.
“I don’t know the proper labels for this kind of thing,” I said as I toyed with her hair. “But I really enjoy your company, and I definitely loved fucking you…”
“Why don’t we label it later?” Helena suggested with a warm smile. “There’s no reason we can’t continue as we are, and just… see where this leads.”
“I like that idea,” I murmured.
The Grecian harpy smiled lazily at me as she settled comfortably against my side, and her breathing evened out into sleep a short time later.
I laid awake for a while, though, and I studied the various shades of tan and white in Helena’s tawny feathers as the insanity of the world hit me again.
My logical brain knew I was king, that millions of lives were affected by my choices, and that I had the power to change everything with a single command.
But there was a large part of me that still rejected the idea as total fantasy. How could I possibly have gone from a middle management schlump to king of a world I hadn’t even known existed?
I shook my head slightly as my thoughts turned to the potential for someone else to take up leadership of the Machités gia tin Elefthería. The crowds at the stadium had seemed ecstatic about my win, but I knew there were many more in the population of Greece that could still be in support of Alexander’s radical ideas.
There wasn’t anything I could do about it at the moment, and it was totally possible nothing would come of it anyway.
Besides, I had a wedding to plan.
I smiled as I thought about my teal-haired fiancée sleeping in the room across the hall, and I shook my head again as I looked at Helena’s face. The two women were very different in so many ways, but they were both gorgeous, strong, and intelligent.
Now I couldn’t imagine my life without either of them, and hopefully, I’d never have to.
It was really fucking good to be king.
