“Yea, it’s been really great having you all here.” Steffi smiled brightly as we stopped in front of the headmaster’s office doors.

“I don’t think that’s why Burkhard wants to talk to us, though,” Elisabeth pondered quietly.

“What do you mean?” Nala asked.

“We had two kinds of displaced monsters,” Elisabeth pointed out. “And they were working together.”

“El’s right,” I agreed. “We haven’t had anything like this happen before. This is big.”

“Do you think we’ll get more displaced monsters working together?” Steffi asked.

“I don’t know,” I said. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just the start of more monster cooperation.”

Nala rapped her knuckles against the door three times to announce our arrival.

“Come in,” Burkhard’s deep voice called from inside.

I pushed the door open and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw who was inside with the Kingpin look-alike.

Four imposing men in expensive and well-tailored suits sat in the chairs across from Burkhard as if a very important meeting was taking place. They had official-looking visitor tags on their lapels, and a general air of authority hung about them like a thick cloud of cologne.

“Thank you, gentlemen,” the headmaster said as he stood from his chair. “I’ll take it from here.”

“Very good, Burkhard,” one of the men said as they all stood and turned to leave the office.

My team and I pressed ourselves out of the way to allow the important-looking men to pass.

“Please, have a seat, there’s no time to waste.” Burkhard gestured to the chairs before his desk.

“What’s going on, sir?” Steffi asked as she and the other girls sat in the chairs.

The guys and I lined up behind them as we’d done earlier in the day to hear what the headmaster had to tell us.

“Is this about the Tsuchinoko?” I asked, but my gut told me there was something else going on. “Because we did have some unexpected, displaced visitors during the mission today.”

“Dr. Hastings has informed me about the Jorogumo, and I know you were successful in handling the situation.” Headmaster Burkhard steepled his fingers in front of him. “So, unless there was something more to add, I would like to use this time to discuss a more important issue with you all.”

Nala and Elisabeth glanced over their shoulders at me, and their eyebrows were furrowed with concern.

Ronin and Wisp looked at each other, and Nick shifted on his feet with agitation.

“What is it, sir?” I asked.

“There’s been a situation in Tanzania,” Burkhard said. “A displaced monster from our jurisdiction is wreaking havoc, and the African Academy has requested immediate assistance handling the foreign threat. Your team is the only one I can trust to handle the situation.”

  “Tanzania?” Nala repeated with surprise.

“Yes, Ms. Jefferson.” The Headmaster nodded. “You and your team will depart for Africa first thing in the morning.”
