‘None of that was intentional, Victor. He just wanted to give people a fright.’

  ‘Jack Follis certainly had one.’

‘Mr Ewart planted that bomb when the brake van was empty. That shows his concern for people nearby. He gave thought to consequences. He didn’t realise that the guard would come haring along so soon after he’d planted his device.’

‘What about his friendship with Mrs Brightwell?’ asked Hinton.

‘Yes,’ added Leeming, ‘you still haven’t told us the full story about how she came to be strangled.’

‘And I’m not sure that I want to,’ warned Colbeck.

  ‘Why is that?’

‘Some things are best left unsaid. Mr Ewart and Mrs Brightwell were essentially good people. They did a great deal for this city, and that’s how they deserve to be remembered. Each of them was inspired by a passion that drove them on,’ said Colbeck, sadly. ‘It’s unfortunate that their individual passions got wildly out of control.’
