Chapter 1
“I cannot believe that you quit your job!” Judith Hathaway wrung her plump hands as she stared at her only child.
“I did not quit Mama, I resigned.” Juliette clarified as she folded her underwear carefully and placed them at the bottom of her suitcase. “I discussed it with you last month in detail, remember?”
“And I tried to talk you out of it. I thought I had succeeded. There is still time to reconsider darling. The school year is out and if things don’t work out, you can always go back to teaching. You are very good at it.”
Juliette stopped her packing and sat next to her mother on the side of the bed, a fond expression on her face. It had been the two of them since her dad had died when she was only ten years old and they had done almost everything together. Her mother had sacrificed her life to send her to college on her salary as a librarian and had done everything she could so that Juliette was not saddled with a crippling student loan and for that she was very grateful. She certainly did not want her to feel that it had been done in vain. She had started teaching when she was twenty-two and had done it for eight years. She loved delving into the past and trying to reach young minds and to give them a feel and taste of how fascinating history was, but she had lost the passion for teaching and had been hankering to write historical novels for years now. She had been putting down little notes here and now and had made her final decision at the close of the school year. If she did not do it now, it will never be done. Heck, she might not be able to write worth a fig, but she had to try.
“Mama, I have to do this, and I would like your support.” She told her gently, taking her hands. “If it doesn’t work out and I find that I have been chasing after a very hopeless dream, I still have my degree and I can always go back to teaching.”
“But you are going so far away! Willoughby Township – It is hundreds of miles away.”
“I told you about the history of the place!” Juliette’s large dark brown eyes turned dreamy as she spoke. “The ranch has been around since the early eighteenth century and is owned by the same family. It is steeped in history and has a tragic story that I will be writing about. The eldest Willoughby daughter fell in love with a slave and their love affair was cut short by her father who killed both of them when he discovered that she was pregnant by the guy.”
“Honey that’s just awful!”
Juliette bit her full bottom lip. “You know how I love a happy ending, so I am going to write a different spin to the story. I will stick to the salient facts, but I am going weave a plot around those two that will have me and everyone else weeping at the end. It might turn out to be a bestseller and a Hollywood masterpiece.” She added with a smile. “But there is a setback.”
“What is it?”
“The owner of the ranch. Ever heard of Kayden Willoughby?”
“The billionaire rancher of the breed and cattle ranch? He has been featured in several newspapers.”
“In order to write my story, I have to go to the ranch directly and get a feel of the place, but he does not allow people on the ranch who do not work there. I have spoken to his assistant, a Tom Berry and the man sounded extremely nervous to ask for permission. He told me that Mr. Willoughby was a hard man and not very approachable.”
“Maybe that’s a sign.” Her mother pointed out.
Juliette let loose her tinkling laugh, her deep dimples peeping out. “When have you ever known me to let anything stand in my way?”
“Honey, if the man does not want you on his property how then; are you going to gain access?”
“I am going to use my powers of persuasion.” Juliette said firmly as she arose and resumed her packing. “I am not going to let Mr. Kayden Willoughby stand in the way of my dreams.”
Judith shook her head as she stared at her beautiful daughter fondly. Juliette Hathaway was a size eighteen black woman with voluptuous curves that she wore very well and a flawless cocoa brown complexion, her thick dark hair was natural and framed her round face in a riot of curls. She had a bubbly personality that endeared people to her and had a smile on her face almost always.
“Well, you still have a couple of days before you go. How about us going to dinner and a movie afterwards….?”
“You just read my mind….”

Kayden shot upright from the pillows, his heart racing inside his chest, his forehead beading with perspiration as he looked wildly around the room. It took several minutes for him to recognize where he was and taking several deep breaths, he slowed his heart rate down. Leaning against the headboard, he passed his hands over his face and took several more breaths. He thought the nightmares were gone. He had spent thousands on therapy just so that he could at least get to sleep at nights, and he thought that he had finally gotten there but obviously not. The dream had been hell! A cross between the action he had seen when he was in the army and the incredible abuse he had experienced at his uncle’s hands, his only living relative. Shaking his head to get rid of the remnants of memory, he swung his legs out of the bed and reached for his loose sweatpants to drag over his naked body before heading towards the bathroom. It was barely four A.M. but he always liked to have an early start and he did not need much sleep anyway. Sleep meant relaxation and too much free time to remember things he would rather have buried. Bracing his hands against the stark black and white tiles, he stared at himself in the mirror, taking in the slightly reddened irises and the brightness of his stormy gray eyes. His thick dark brown hair tinted liberally with blonde was disheveled and there was heavy stubble on the hard planes of his face. A frown was etched at his brow, giving his face the usual forbidding and harsh look. He had a straight nose and sensuous lips which did not smile much if at all. His six-foot three inches frame was whipcord in strength and toned to pure muscles with not an ounce of extra fat on display. Years of hard manual work had seen to that and the years he had spent in the saddle had given his gait a bowlegged appearance. Straightening up, he strode towards the huge shower stall and slid the doors open as he took off his pants and stepped into it. He stood beneath the needles of the spray and allowed the water to beat over his head and onto his skin for a full five minutes before reaching for the sponge and the shower gel.
Forcing himself to think about the ranch, he itemized all the things he needed to take care of today. He had meetings with the ranch hands about the cattle branding as well as the annual summer tours to give his stamp of approval on. It was the height of summer and the heat had taken on a world of its own, the sun beating down on them with the merciless hammer of open flames. The troughs where the cattle and horses drank from were emptying faster than they were filling and some kind of animals were making furrows along the perimeter fences. The ranch spread over thousands of acres and it took a lot to see to the wide range of cattle and horses they had on the property. He had taken over from his uncle when he died seven years ago, right after he came back from his second stint in the army and had managed to turn the million-dollar ranch into a multi-billion enterprise. They not only specialized in breeding horses and cattle but owned assets in and around the township which made them the most lucrative enterprise in the area.
Turning off the shower, he stepped out of it and grabbed a towel to dry off before carefully placing it on the hook. Looking around to see if he had left anything out of place, he went into the bedroom to get dressed. His room was spartan and utilitarian. He did not go in for fashion and was comfortable in faded denims and chambray shirts. His one concession was not to wear an outfit for two days straight because of how much sweat he produced on a daily basis. He had a housekeeper who took care of the large ranch house and two maids under her supervision who did the general cleaning. Sometimes he would swing by for lunch or dinner but most of the times, he ate with his men. Mrs. Hodges, (He had never bothered to learn her first name!) had been with the family for the past fifteen years and did a very good job running the household. She did not sleep over but would come by early in the mornings to do her duty and controlled the household with a rod of iron. The place was clean and always immaculate, something for which Kayden was extremely grateful for. He was obligated to throw several parties and invite other ranch owners from out of town as well as host a few business meetings with prospective horse owners. It was something he hated but it was a necessary evil which he tolerated. He did not like company and was not close to anyone. He belonged to the Elite Club and made his yearly contribution, taking the time out, rather reluctantly to make an appearance whenever he could spare the time. He slaked his lust when he felt the need to do so by going to a woman in town, who made herself available whenever he called. He had no idea if he was the only one she was seeing but that did not matter to him. He was not interested in a relationship and as soon as he had achieved his satisfaction after making sure she got hers, he would leave. He never spent the night and never called her. He gave her gifts, jewelries and had set her up with money in her bank account but that was as far as he went.
Picking out clean underwear, he pulled it on and finished dressing in his usual economical movement before strapping on the plain wristwatch that he owned. It was still dark out and he switched on lights as he made his way to the kitchen to make coffee to take with him.

“I cannot believe that you resigned your job and are moving away!” Karen handed her friend the glass of wine and settled back against the cushions. “To say that I am going to miss you, is putting it mildly. Who is going to encourage me whenever I feel like throwing in the towel?”
“Honey, I am not going to outer space.” Juliette grinned as she sipped her wine and stretched her legs out. “They do have internet where I am going and phone services.”
“It will not be the same.” Her best friend insisted as she shook back her straight black hair. She was a language teacher at the same high school as Juliette and they had been friends since college. Karen had been through two divorces and it had taken Juliette’s effervescent nature to get her through them. “Who knows? Maybe you will find the man of your dreams while you are there.”
“One can but hope.” Juliette told her with a smile. “But I am not looking right now. I am just going to concentrate on my writing and focus entirely on the plot.” She sipped the wine reflectively. “I am so excited about this Karen. I know that you and Mama have objections and doubts, but I think – “she shook her head. “I know I made the right decision.”
“I wish I was as decisive as you are,” Karen leaned over to pour some more wine into her glass. “I am beginning to think that I have outgrown Hillside High and that I should get the hell out of there while I can. What with Mark still there teaching and seeing Melody.” She stared into her glass moodily.
“I thought you were okay with that,” Juliette looked at her friend in concern. “Are you still in love with him? He did cheat on you from the start of the marriage Karen.”
“I am not in love with him, I am pissed.” Karen said darkly as she drank down the wine. “Every time I see him with her, I want to pitch a fit and scratch their eyes out.” She shrugged. “I have been contemplating leaving but it feels like I am turning tail and running, and I am not a coward. I did not do anything wrong dammit!”
“But sometimes it is more prudent to cut your losses.” Juliette told her gently. “Seeing them every day has to have an effect on you. He was your husband.”
“And I should not have married him in the first place. I replaced Lenny with him and I never got over and it turned out to be a disaster. The thing is - I do not really blame him for cheating on me because my heart was not in it and he knew it.”
“And Lenny is still single.”
“Not anymore. He is seeing some lawyer. I caved and called him a week ago.”
“Was that a good idea?”
“Nope.” Karen said bitterly. “He sounded as if I had committed the ultimate sin by doing so. We spent ten years together and he was the first man for me. We were childhood sweethearts and it was supposed to last a lifetime. But he could not accept the fact that I could not have kids. We talked about adopting so many times and I agreed to go the surrogate route, but I guess he was not up for that.”
“You still love him.”
“Lord have mercy! I do.” She shook her head in despair.
“Then you should fight for him.”
Karen stared at her as if she had lost her mind. “Did you hear the part about him moving on and the problems we had?”
“I heard all of that, but I believe in the path of true love and yours definitely is. Don’t give up on it or him Karen. There has to be a way.”
“What do you suggest I do?”
“Get in his face and get him to start noticing you again.”

Kayden switched off the engine and sat in the vehicle, gray eyes scanning the area. The house was set on top of a slight incline and offered a lovely view of the rioting begonias and wild daisies growing among the lush grass. It was almost ten P.M. but the heat had only abated slightly. He had driven himself and his men furiously in spite of the heat as they tried to get ready for the thunderstorm that had been predicted for Saturday and now he was feeling weary as if every bone in his body was aching. He had called Melanie and told her that he was coming over and she said she would wait up for him. He wanted to see if he could get rid of the tension by being with her. Maybe after a vigorous bout of sex, he would sleep without dreams tonight. Alighting from the vehicle, he headed towards the cobbled driveway and up the steps where the door was opened before he cleared the top step. She was wearing a see-through green negligee that somehow mirrored her eyes and her dark hair was tumbled down over her left shoulder in artful disarray. The light from the living room gave her ivory skin a luminescent look to it and there was a smile on her lips that were painted red. Kayden felt the surge of lust in his loins as he moved towards her.
“I put a bottle of wine to chill,” She stepped back and allowed him to enter. “You look tired.”
