  Chapter 1

“It’s just a small part darling, nothing too complicated. A few lines in an action flick that your father is directing.” Melissa Gilroy’s voice was persuasive as she stood in front of her son. “Think how fun it will be for us to be in the same movie again. Remember Fast Forward and Think Fast? Those movies sent the fans into a crazy spin! Mother and son in the same movies; with you playing the protagonist!” She sat next to him on the faded sofa and forced herself not to grimace. Chad Elijah Gilmore was the only offspring of famous parents and had spent his entire twenty-seven years trying to fight it and be as unobtrusive as possible which had not really worked, considering that he was famous in his own right. He had the creative genes and could not run away from it considering that his father was the world-renowned actor/director James Gilroy and his mother, one of the most outstanding actresses for two decades and counting.

“I am not interested.” Chad’s mouth twisted in a cynical smile. “You must be desperate to come slumming.” He waved a hand at the sparsely decorated living room with the shabby furniture. He had moved out of the opulent mansion when he turned twenty and had bummed around Europe for a couple of years as he tried to lose the image of being the son and heir of his parents. “Let me guess - Father sent you to come and try and talk me into taking the part. Obviously, the fact that I have ignored all of his calls and messages as well as the emails did not give him his answer.” He shook his tumble of wild dark hair, his green eyes hard as flint. Like most child actors growing up with famous parents, he had slid off the narrow path and had done it all. Drugs, alcohol and fast cars before he even turned twenty. He had had one sliver of happiness in his life and that had been when he was seventeen - he shied away from that. The pain was still there after ten years and each time his brain tried to focus on that part of his life, he would forcibly push it away. It was in the past and he could not go back there. He had spent years trying to forget her with countless women and it never worked so now he was embracing the pain and evolving. He had found his niche in life after all the pain and disillusionment. He had founded and was operating a shelter for neglected boys and was finding that it was very therapeutic indeed, a catharsis for his own painful childhood. A lot of people think that having loads of money meant that there was happiness there, but he had learned the hard way that was not the case. He was not happy in the true sense of the word but at least he had found some sort of peace.

“Darling we love you and we think that you are wasting your life- “

“By trying to do some good?” His thick dark brows lifted as he got to his feet and went to get another beer. “I am sorry Mother,” he said with a twisted smile. “I am fresh out of the good stuff. No Dom Perignon in the cooler, just plain old imported beers. I am on a budget.”

Melissa stiffened and refused to rise to the bait, her green eyes a mirror image of her only child assessing him. Her thick blond hair was still lustrous due to hundreds of dollars paid to her own personal stylist and her face was creamy and unmarked, belying the fact that she was fifty-two years old last September. Her plastic surgeon – the go-to discreet Dr. Laird was very good at his job and had told her with his charming smile that she did not need the work. But she was not taking any chances. She belonged to a vicious circle with younger and talented actresses coming up every day and she had to even the odds. “I did not come here to drink Chad and I have to tell you that you are being very difficult. Just one movie darling and I promise that I will never bother you about any such thing again. Not even to ask you to come back home for me!”

“Something I am never going to do!”

“What have we ever done to you?” Melissa asked him quietly. “All we ever did was to try to be the best parents we could be to our son…. “

His harsh laugh cut her off. “Let me see ….” He tapped the side of his head with the beer bottle. “There was Maria, the Hispanic nanny when I was about three or four and she lasted what? A year? Then after that there was Lola, the French girl with the big boobs who taught me the language. She lasted two years and I often wondered if it was because Father was screwing her.” He ignored the stiff look on his mother’s face and continued. “After the fifth one, I lost count. You and Father were so busy with your individual careers that I was ignored until you discovered that I had inherited your creative gene and then you paraded me in front of cameras and shoved me into the limelight. I was a prop, a toy to make you look good and pretend that you were good parents. You ignored me most of the time; that was until ….” He broke off and swallowed the beer, turning away to go and look out the window.

He stiffened when he felt her come up behind him.

“It’s about that - that horrible plus sized girl that came from the wrong side of town. That is why you are punishing us after all these years.”

He turned to look at her and she stepped back at the cold light in his green eyes that reminded her of frozen glass. “That horrible girl’ as you put it Mother was the best thing that ever happened to me and you and Father destroyed that.” He rubbed a hand over his forehead wearily. “Look, I don’t want to rehash anything, and I am telling you politely that I am not interested in acting. I have done that, and I am done with that part of my life. Please respect my decision and leave me the hell alone!”

“Elena come on! You have been holed up in this crummy apartment for the past three days. You are beginning to look like the four walls and honey believe me when I say that is not a compliment. The walls are cream or some sort of horrible off-white. I am inviting you to a party of the millennium. There will be booze, drugs - and I know that you do not imbibe but there will also be men there - single men for you to choose from. I swear that I am beginning to think that all is lost for you when it comes to you getting laid.”

“Unlike you, I have a lot of work to do.” Elena said mildly, not in the least bit insulted by the slights. “You are gay - Joel and every day for you is a party. I am racing against the clock to get this book finished. I need the money.”

“And I told you that I can spot you rent for this month. I am loaded honey, at least my parents are, and I get to live off their money and do whatever the hell I please.”

  “I don’t want handouts.”

“It’s called help from a friend and you need to get off that high horse of yours and accept it. Treat it as a gift.”

“You mean like that horribly expensive phone you forced on me? Or that laptop that I could never afford?” Elena walked into her tiny kitchen and put the kettle on. She was a ghostwriter and her genre was historical romance which meant that she had to do a lot of research whenever she was starting a novel.

“At least it helped you with your work. That laptop that you were using was so unpredictable that it kept losing your data. I don’t believe you thanked me enough.”

  “I said thanks, remember?”

“Barely. I don’t feel appreciated so that’s why I am inviting you to this gala and I am not taking no for an answer. I bought a dress……”

  “No.”

“Too late darling. It’s a Romano’s original and with shoes and accessories to match. It’s already on its way to your tiny apartment. I looked it up on their site and it’s perfect for that flawless dark complexion and that head of thick dark hair of yours and of course it will flatter your full figure. I even included underwear….!”

  “You did not!”

“I did darling. It’s not like I have not seen you dishabille and I have seen your underwear drawer and those granny panties. No wonder you don’t have a man!”

“I don’t have a man because I am not interested in any.” She said patiently as she poured the water over the pouch.

“You need to get over that jerk that broke your heart all those years ago.”

  “I am over him.”

“Yeah right…..” Joel snorted. “You are so over him that you turn away every available man that comes across your path.”

“Stop lecturing me.” She said crossly as she stirred the honey into the cup.

“I am picking you up tomorrow night darling and I am not leaving until you are inside the vehicle.”

  “I am driving myself.”

“No, you are not!” he said firmly. “As your best friend I am taking charge of your very pitiful life. The last time I invited you out somewhere and you drove yourself, you spent two hours and left. I am driving.”

“No! Not after one in the morning.”

“More like after two or three. Darling the day after will be Sunday. You get to sleep late in bed.”

  “Joel….”

“Uh oh, I have a call on the other line. See you tomorrow darling and put some makeup on.”

Elena heard the dial tone in her ear and moved the phone away with a grimace. Joel was like a bulldozer, but he was her best friend and had been there for her in her rough times. She shook her head to get rid of the incredibly disturbing memories as she took her cup with her into the bedroom.

  *****

Chad dumped the bottle into the recycle bin and stood there in the kitchen, staring inside the pantry. After he had decided that he was going to move out of the mansion and strike out on his own without maids or anything like that, he had had to learn to cook and had found that he rather enjoyed it. He did not spend a lot of time at his apartment, because the boy’s home took up so much of his time. At the back of his mind was the fact that he was the sole heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune which included real estate, several private jets, an island in the Mediterranean and a sleek yacht that he had not set foot on in several years. Slamming the door shut he turned to the fridge to take out another beer and a couple of yogurts. He was not in the mood to cook today. His mother’s visit had stirred up some very painful memories and even after she had left in a huff, he was still dealing with it. His childhood had been difficult, and he knew that some people would not understand the concept of him going through so much when they had all that money. His suite at the mansion had been bigger than this entire apartment, with opulent furnishings and imported rugs. The manor was equipped with both an indoor and an outdoor pool, a giant theater, basketball and tennis courts, a pool house that was larger than most houses and a garage with cars that rivaled a car mart. He had been given a Porsche when he turned sixteen and acquired his driver’s license and had used it to pick up as many girls as he could. He was Chad Gilroy and had the looks, fame and wealth to go with it. Girls chased him and dropped their clothes without him having to ask. Even older women had chased after him, wanting the ‘in’ that he could provide. He had been left on his own and the party never stopped. He had an endless supply of recreational drugs and alcohol and everyone thought it a privilege to attend any party he threw. He had been careless and reckless with people’s feelings, changing women every week, sometimes juggling two or three at a time without qualms. He was Chad Gilroy, teen idol and star to many and he took advantage of it. That was until he met her…. Twisting the top off his beer he took a healthy swallow of it and almost choked as he swallowed too fast. “Please let me forget.” He whispered to no one in particular as he walked over to the counter and sat on the stool. “Just let me forget and move on. I just want to forget.”

  *****

“What did he say?” James Gilroy looked up from his desktop computer as his wife came into the lofty room that served as his office.

“What do you think?” She answered - her tone surly as she sank down into the deep cushioned chair in front of the desk and crossed elegant legs.

  “He turned it down.”

“Yes James, it appears that our son does not want anything to do with us and it’s our fault.”

“We have given that boy every advantage possible. What the hell does he have to complain about?” He asked gruffly as he shook back his thick mane of black hair threaded through with gray. Chad had inherited his strong hawk like nose, stubborn chin and his six foot four inches of pure unadulterated male as well as his thick dark hair.

“He doesn’t seem to think so.” Melissa eased her feet out of the leather heels she had worn for her trip out. In order to go to the area where her son lived, she had had to disguise herself by wearing sunglasses and a scarf even though it was already dark out. She had shuddered as she exited the obscure vehicle she had taken and prayed that she was not mugged. “It’s our fault.” She said quietly. “You have not stopped screwing around with anything in skirts and I ….” She lifted her hands and dropped them back down. “I have been far from discreet in my affairs. We have not been good parents to him and now he is suffering for it.”

  “We made mistakes.”

Melissa laughed cynically. “Mistakes? Is that what you call them? At least I have not become the cliched wife by screwing the pool boy, but you screwed almost all the nannies we ever had for Chad.”

  “He knows about that?”

“He does. And there is something else.”

  “What?”

“I think he is still in love with that girl.”

  “What girl?”

Melissa looked at him and shook her head. “How could you forget that scene when he was seventeen and we found him in that shabby place with that ….. that big girl! We had to whisk him away to Europe and threaten to turn in the girl’s mother if he ever gets in touch with her again.”

  “He is over her.”

“I don’t think he is.” She said quietly. “He admitted that to me just a few minutes ago.”

“Then he is a fool!” James’ gray eyes glittered. “He is Chad Gilroy and can get any woman he wants. What the hell had he seen in that …. that girl? Do you think he is in touch with her?”

“I doubt it.” She said dryly. “All I know is that the apartment where he lives is a disaster. I was afraid to step foot in the place and there is almost no furniture there. If the press gets wind of where he is living now, it will be a disaster.”

“I am going to march there and insist that he finds another apartment. The one on Chelsea Street is available and it has a doorman and the works….”

“If we push him, we will lose him James.” His wife told him wearily. “If you go marching over there, he is going to move somewhere we cannot find him.” She shook her blonde head. “We should just let him be for the time being.”

“He is our son! The only child we have.”

“He is not a child anymore and we are going to have to step back.” She clasped her hands in front of her. “I miss him.”
