Bobby said, “Where are you going?”

Bo said, “I’m going to get some sun. What about you?”

“Me, too,” Bobby said. “I’m going to get plenty of sun.”

Two days later, Bo chuckled at a joke, and took another bite of barbecue, and asked for a can of beer. The neighbors in that nice neighborhood in the Franklin Mountains in northwest El Paso sure knew how to throw a block party, she thought.

Bobby looked at the front of the building and remembered the first day he went to kindergarten. He was so scared and apprehensive. The building was so white and clean, the grass green, and there were palm trees everywhere. He looked at the sign with the address, 39000 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage, California.

He walked through the arched doorway and up to a reception desk. A pleasant-looking woman smiled at him.

Tears filled Bobby’s eyes, and he was embarrassed, saying, “My name is Bobby Samuels. I have reservations.”

She smiled broadly, saying, “Major Samuels, we have been expecting you. Welcome to the Betty Ford Center. This will be your new home for the next month.”

Bobby tried to smile, but was really fighting to hold back the tears right now. He could not wait to climb into a bed and get some sleep, lots of it.
