“What is it that you want to show me?”

  “Just a moment, Lareth.”

They Slid again, completing the rest of the Slide, and emerged with a bright red glowing behind him. It was the source of the heat, and with it, he suddenly knew where they were. All this time, and he hadn’t discovered that?

  “Look,” Olandar Fahr said.

Rsiran stared in the direction the man pointed, and as he did, his breath caught, his heart hammering.

  “Haern?”

Olandar Fahr chuckled. “Yes. Your son has tried to come for you on his own. And now this is your choice.”

  “What choice?”

“Provide the information that I seek, or watch me cut down your son.”

  “No.”

“You would prefer to see him die? I assure you that I would have no qualms in doing so.”

Rsiran continued to stare, watching, and as he did, he tried to call out, trying to reach for Haern, but Olandar Fahr pulled him into a Slide, stepping off the Slide and into the place in between.

“That is your choice, Lareth. Choose, but I will only give you a few more moments to do so.”

“You will call your people off?”

Olandar Fahr stared at him. “I promise only that I won’t attack him.”

  “That’s not enough.”

Haern wasn’t strong enough of a fighter to hold off the Ai’thol like that. He might have gained some skill, and if he had continued his training with Galen, then it was possible that he would be able to fight, to hold off some of the Ai’thol, but with the dozens Rsiran had seen, there would be no way for Haern to survive.

“That is all I can offer.”

The choice was easy—disturbingly so. He wanted nothing to happen to Haern, and everything he’d done over the years had been to protect his son from the possibility of this.

“What do you want to know?”

  “You know what I want.”

  “The crystals?”

Olandar Fahr tipped his head in a nod.

“Even if you claim them, there’s no way that I can make them work for you.”

“I’m not asking you to make them work for me. But you will help me acquire them. You, the only man who has held each of the crystals of the Great Watcher, will do this. If you don’t, then your son…”

The threat lingered, and there was nothing that Rsiran could do but agree.

  “I’ll do it.”

“Of course you will, Lareth. I knew you would make no other choice.”

With that, they stepped forward, continuing the Slide.

The leader of the Ai’thol has worked for centuries on his plan to control the power of the stones. The final steps in that plan come into focus.

Altered and augmented by his new connection to the metal lorcith, Haern must use this ability to protect the women he’s brought with him from the dangerous city of Dresden. A series of attacks suggests a control over metal that even Haern might not be able to withstand. Worse, the source of the attacks might be closer than he knows.

Daniel’s search for the remaining stone brings him to a surprising place. Once there, it becomes increasingly clear how little they know about the stones—or how to protect them. Answers require he learn how to master aspects of his powers that have been beyond him, but are essential for what is to come.

Lucy begins to suspect another threat that rivals even Olander Fahr. Learning more about this threat requires that she chase the one person she fears most. If she can’t find—and face—the Architect, they won’t know what Olander Fahr intends in time to stop his plan.

Separated from the Great One, Ryn wants to understand her blessing, but she’s tasked with much more. Searching for answers reveals a deeper divide within the Ai’thol. As emissary, she shouldn’t be the one to fix it, but in the Great One’s absence, she might be the only one who can.

Power begins to gather to stop a great danger for more than the power of the Elder Stones is at stake.
