  So here we are, Mikie.

  It’s been a long while.

And I don’t miss you any less.

  Kira - 59

Kira fought to stay awake, each slide of her lids harsh as sandpaper against her eyeballs. The hum of the car engine an out of tune lullaby.

‘How you feeling?’ Leona sat with knees bent, bare feet on the backseat. The top of her tattered lime-green tracksuit was pulled over her knees, creating serious fake boobs. A regular B-grade Dolly Parton.

‘Like someone just fucked me over,’ Kira said. ‘In a way I definitely didn’t pay for.’

Sober as a judge, but her words slurred through lips that barely had the energy to pull apart from one another. Thinking hurt. Hell, everything did. Her skin hot and irritated, like she’d been out sunbaking with lashings of coconut oil. Kira’s metal hand rested on the stringless bow she’d taken from the penthouse, now cradled in her lap. It had remained in a contracted state, little bigger than a ruler, and she didn’t dare play around with it, in case she found the ‘go full size and poke someone in the eye’ button. When Clara had pointed it their way at the penthouse the bow had definitely been longer, like Clara’s body length long. And the chick was no short-ass.

‘Well, you fucked them right back.’ Damn if Witchy Parton didn’t sound the teeniest bit proud. ‘You both did.’ Leona nodded at Bradley, curled up between them on the seat like an oversized piece of strange candy, candy that breathed in big gulping breaths. ‘It was quite the display.’

‘What was with him?’ Kira jerked her chin towards the lizard and grimaced. Quick movement equalled bad hurty stuff. ‘Did you know he could . . . do that . . . dragon shit?’ She kind of hissed it, hoping to keep Tweedledee and Tweedledum riding up front, out of the loop. Right now, Jared and Brian were arguing over which way was the quickest to the airport.

Leona gave Kira a big dose of disapproving-mother face. At least, Kira assumed mothers could look like that. She didn’t have a comparison.

‘What Bradley did was in no way “shit”,’ Leona said. ‘And no, I was not aware of that particular ability. He has always had a very strong link with the Maiden, but there was no hint of this before. But then, much is not as it was before.’

Cue dramatic shift of gaze to Kira’s metal arm. Bug, meet microscope. ‘Righto. Settle down. No need for extra drama. Got plenty of that right now, thanks.’ Kira rubbed at her knee. Shit. Sunburn goddamn everywhere.

‘Indeed. And I believe we are seeing just the beginnings of it.’ Leona’s gaze, tracing over every inch of Kira’s face, was almost as uncomfortable as her sensitive skin.

‘Why are you looking at me like that?’

‘You are only slightly duller than him now.’

‘It doesn’t seem like the right time for insults.’

Leona surprised her with a gentle smile. ‘I know you are frightened, Kira. And well you ought to be. Your sister, and the visitors she aids, have messed with things they shouldn’t have. Brought to us a bright one, the likes of which this Earth has not seen for thousands of years. An ancient soul, built by the gods themselves. I understand the source of Azrael’s power, but yours . . .’ her gaze moved to the lizard, ‘and the suddenness of the Maiden’s own gain in strength, well they are both wonderful mysteries.’

Kira let out her breath between pursed lips. She didn’t want to think about Blake the world-destroying sister right now. She didn’t want to glow or gleam or do anything but get in a cool bath and have someone wash her back for her. Her train of thought moved from baths to showers to its logical conclusion: Nina. Where the hell had she and Rossiter ended up?

The lights up ahead flicked to red, but Brian hit the gas and shot through the intersection.

‘Jesus!’ Kira cried, bracing herself against the back of his seat. ‘Are you fucking insane?’

‘Sorry, sorry!’ he cried. ‘I was listening and got distracted.’

So much for keeping the conversation on the down low.

‘Well, let’s not add getting arrested to the list,’ Kira said. ‘’Cause one of us in this car is wanted for murder.’

Brian stared at her in the rearview mirror, eyes bugging. ‘Murder? Holy fuck, what –’

‘Forget it.’ Kira slumped against her seat. ‘Sweet Christ, I need a drink.’

Jared hunched forward, scrabbling around in the footwell before brandishing a beer bottle. ‘Do you want one of these?’

He handed it to her, that glorious bottle of golden fuck-it-all juice. It was within snatching distance when Leona shattered the dream. She grabbed the bottle and dumped it into her own footwell.

‘Last thing you need is inebriation, young lady. No telling what could happen,’ Leona sniffed.

‘I could tell you what I’d like to happen.’ Kira pasted on the best glare she could manage, even though it stung like hell where her skin wrinkled.

‘I’m trying to help you.’ Leona released her knees from captivity, letting the tracksuit jacket slide free.

  ‘Don’t need it.’

  ‘Bullshit.’

One point to the witch. Kira kept up the glare for another couple of seconds, then let it slide, turning to stare out the window. The metal running up her neck pinched hard where it met flesh just below her earlobe. She bit down on her lip, hoping Leona hadn’t noticed the jerk of her shoulders. Dumb stupid witch and her sudden niceness. What was with that? Leona was wrong, too. About Kira being frightened. Wrong! Not frightened – goddamn terrified. Of pretty much everything. Like this car ride. And being hurt again the way Tamas had hurt her. Of seeing Blake again. Of not seeing Blake again. Kira tapped a fingernail against her metal wrist. The sound that came back wasn’t what you’d expect; it wasn’t tinny or metallic in any way. More like tapping marble. It had always been like that. The armadillo had always been something strange. Alien. But a part of her, nonetheless. Not usually something to be frightened of.

Leona leaned forward, brushing her fingers against Jared’s blond strands. He flinched, turning to stare at her. ‘You all right?’

‘Thought I saw something caught in there.’ Leona smiled. ‘Sorry.’

But not sorry enough to stop. Only this time it was Brian’s turn. For someone who appeared to be about a thousand years old, Leona could move. She scooted right up close to the sleeping lizard and reached for Brian’s red curls. In her other hand, she clutched the beer bottle. It was open and sloshing golden amber onto the faux black leather seat as she leaned forward.

‘Thought I saw something there, too.’ Leona’s smile was back, but in a too chipper kind of way. Obviously fake. ‘Sorry, boys.’

Kira expected some kind of reply, an ‘it’s okay, crazy lady’ at the very least. But there was nothing. They turned back in their seats and locked eyes on the road. Leona settled back with a smug smile on her face. ‘That will make things easier for the moment. Keep them focused on a single task.’

‘What did you do to them?’ Kira said. ‘And what are you doing with the rest of the beer?’

The answer to question two came immediately. The witch shoved it between her legs, right up high next to her lime velour-encased lady garden.

‘If you’re that desperate, feel free.’ She waved her hands over the open bottle.

Kira considered it as the scent of hops played at her nostrils. She needed dullness, something to deaden the roar of her body. Something to push back the memory of being goddamn tortured.

  She swallowed. ‘Pass.’

‘Thought so,’ Leona said. ‘I’ve just refocused the boys’ attention on the task at hand rather than the conversation in the back seat. Thought it would be good for us to chat. We should talk about what happened back there, with Tamas.’

Nope. No, we shouldn’t. Kira shook her head. Leona touched her fingers to Kira’s thigh. A gentle enough touch but the skin-to-skin contact flared through Kira like acid. Way too close a sensation to what Tamas had inflicted. All at once, a shit storm of memory dumped itself on her. Fuck, it hurt. So much.

‘Shit, don’t touch me.’ Kira pressed against the door. ‘Don’t touch me.’

‘Sorry.’ Leona held up her hands in surrender. ‘Sorry, love. Kira, take a deep breath. It’s all right. Are you listening to me? It’s all right. Hey, Kira.’

It wasn’t all right. So very not all right. The attack swept up through her core, a rising beast of panic. Her flesh hand shook. Her throat wasn’t being fair about letting enough oxygen in, and if Kira had had a heart capable of racing, it would be doing the minute mile right now. She couldn’t hang this one on Az. This monster was all hers. A panic attack hadn’t haunted her for a long while, but the anxiety had been a constant asshole in the beginning. That first year after waking up with metal parts had sucked severe ass.

Now the claws dug in again, dragging her thoughts to the edge of an inky abyss where fear festered, thick and mucky. Where the fuck was all the air in this car? Kira tried to wind down the window, but it took more coordination than she could get out of her limbs. The pressure at the back of her eyes stepped up a notch, parts of her skull trying to nudge their way free. Dampness spilled down her cheeks. The world was blurry. Fuck. She was going blind. The abyss was taking her –

‘Kira.’ The sharpness of Leona’s voice snapped her back into the car and into the warmth of the seat beneath her. Leona held her metal hand. When had that happened? ‘Love, I’m right here. Now take a breath before you pop a lung.’

‘I can’t see . . . I can’t see properly,’ Kira said. A three-year-old had hijacked her voice, making it wheedle and crack.

‘You’re just crying. It’s tears. Now look at me, love. Take a breath.’

Fingertips, gentle against her chin. Kira blinked. Once, twice, a million times. Leona drifted into focus. A terrible fake tan had never looked so good. The abyss shrank away. Kira wiped at her face, too rough with the metal, scratching at the skin beneath her eyes. But the sting was welcome. She was back. On solid ground. Out of the freak-out panic zone. Leona cupped her hand to Kira’s cheek. No zinging pain. Her skull jigsaw had slotted all its pieces back into place.

‘You with me?’ the witch said, soft as melted butter.

Kira nodded. ‘I don’t know what to do. What I’m doing . . . what any of this . . . what’s happening to me . . .’ The words dissolved on her tongue.

There were flecks of black in Leona’s brown eyes. Really quite pretty. ‘I’ve seen the balls of steel you have, Kira. You’re going to be all right. And you are not alone. Understand me?’

Kira leaned into Leona’s hand. The witch shouldn’t get used to it, but Kira was going with the touchy-feely thing in this moment. A feathery touch at her knee drew her gaze. Bradley perched there, black eyes watchful. He let out a couple of bleats, as soft and gentle as Leona’s words.

Kira sat back, pulling away from Leona. Kodak moment was over. Snotty nose to deal with. Jacket sleeve would fix that and give Kira a chance to hide for a second, too. Fuck, so embarrassing. Losing it. Perry was the only one who had ever seen her turn feral like that. Christ, she missed him.

Brian eased the car into a right turn, both he and Jared keeping their eyes locked on the road. Neither of them had so much as glanced in the rearview mirror. Whatever focus Leona had incanted on their asses was working just fine. Kira sniffed, sucking back an uncomfortable amount of snot. They were driving through an industrial area. Hulking great warehouses loomed on either side of the road. Deserted at this time of night. Morning? Who the fuck knew. She was just about to ask one of the zombie drivers when Bradley sprang from where he still rested on Kira’s knee and launched himself up at the window, splatting flat against it like one of those sticky toys Kira had had as a kid. But the lizard was better value than the shit rubber version. He shifted back and forth across the window, little padded feet acting as suction pads to hold him there.

‘Okay. Is that normal?’ Kira said.

‘Stop!’ Leona shouted. ‘Pull in over there. Now.’ She gestured towards a steel-grey warehouse to the right. Stark-white lights stood sentinel high up on poles, blazing down on two giant piles of tyres. Brian swerved and slammed on the brakes, nearly shoving them all through the front window. Leona was piling out of the car before it had come to a complete stop.

‘Vail!’ she shouted. ‘Vail, where are you, boy?”

‘Vail?’ Kira swung open her door, collecting a reptilian passenger as she jumped out, Bradley scrambling up the armadillo to sit on her shoulder. ‘He’s here?’

He fucking well shouldn’t be. Kid could barely wipe his own butt last time she’d seen him. Bradley chirped. From the corner of her eye, Kira could make out the bobbing of his head. Yes. The lizard was telling her yes. Hell, this week just kept getting better. Something dark and large shifted behind the pile of rubber to their right. Leona dashed towards it, her short, jack-hammered strides managing to make her look half-chicken. She didn’t seem to notice her bare feet on the gravel. Jared and Brian stayed put, the quizzical scrunch of their faces suggesting they weren’t entirely sure why. Kira turned back to the bolting witch. The shape behind the pile shuffled out towards them. It was large, all right. And feathery.

‘Anzu?’ Kira frowned. The beast was in full oversized-rooster mode and limping noticeably. As was Vail, who used Anzu as a giant walking stick. ‘What the hell are you doing –’

Her mouth snapped closed as a third figure emerged from behind the pile. It was like a goddamn clown car back there. And this clown was totally unexpected. Miss Happiness herself. Greta, the flame-haired nonfriendly from the farm. Leona drew up just short of where Vail stood with his arms already raised to greet her. She dug her hands into her hips, and his smile slipped. ‘Leona?’

‘So, you’re all right then.’ Leona ground her heel into the gravel.

  ‘Yes.’ Vail nodded. ‘And you?’

  ‘I’m fine.’

‘Oh, he’s in so much shit.’ Kira whispered to Bradley. The lizard responded with a shrill chirp, then leapt from her shoulder, stumpy legs held wide, soaring like a sugar-glider across the short distance to where Vail stood.

‘Bradley.’ Vail’s smile went back to full high beam. He cupped his hands, and the lizard landed on his palms like a pro. ‘It’s good to see you, little guy.’

‘Are we done with the greetings?’ Greta stood by Anzu’s side. The beast looked exhausted, his sides heaving, wing tips pressed to the ground to keep him steady.

‘Hello to you, too,’ Kira said. ‘Guess William didn’t teach you –’

  ‘Kira,’ Leona hissed.

  ‘What?’

‘He’s dead.’ Greta hurled the words at Kira like a monkey flinging shit. ‘Your sister’s people killed him. And would have killed me too if Will hadn’t made me run like a fucking scared little girl. So just shut your big, foul mouth and listen, you stupid bitch.’

Kira raised her hands. ‘Sorry . . . I’m really sorry about William. Seemed like a good guy. But for the record, they are not Blake’s people.’ The panic attack was still too raw to start thinking about Tamas again so soon, but Kira breathed through the flutterings. They needed to know. Blake didn’t do this. Not this part anyway. ‘My sister had nothing to do with what happened back there. Tamas . . .’ Breathe, swallow, don’t puke. Kira glanced at Leona, then to Vail. ‘She didn’t fucking kill anyone. And they are hurting her. Tamas told me.’

Vail’s expression grew pained, as though he wanted to burst into tears at the news. If he’d looked like shit back at Nina’s, he looked like hell now. The bruising on his face had deepened a shade, a green-violet spreading up to his temple and disappearing behind the blunt fringe. The jeans he wore were clearly a size too big, and the long-sleeved shirt was one of Nina’s. A pastel-pink floral number.

‘I’m so sorry, Kira.’ And there was no doubt he was. What was inside that kid? The soul of a saint? ‘This is all really messed up. And it doesn’t get better anytime soon.’ He paused. ‘Kira, I need to give you something.’

‘Tell me it’s a one-way ticket to somewhere other than here and we are friends for life.’

‘I wish I could.’ Vail edged forward, and Anzu, the living walking stick, moved with him.
