A Question of Hats, page 6
‘Now you are joking, madame. But the hat is very nice. I like it.’
Angela put on the hat and regarded herself in the glass.
‘It’ll do,’ she said. ‘And now I think I shall go out and buy some new spring shoes to go with it!’
And so she did.
Author’s Note
The mediaeval church of St. Margaret of Antioch is a real ruined church in Lee, South London, and its churchyard does in fact contain the tombs of Edmund Halley and two other Astronomers Royal: Nathaniel Bliss and John Pond. It is also true that the house next door to the churchyard sold off its land for building in the early years of last century. Whether any thieves lost their gold bullion in the process is not known; if they did, however, the author admits no liability for the legal costs of any modern-day amateur treasure hunters who may fall foul of the law by being caught wielding a spade in a suspicious manner in a graveyard. (The author is, nevertheless, prepared to settle for a ten per cent share of all proceeds if it turns out the events in this story have any further basis in fact than mere location.)
