Take Me Capo, page 22
“Dario.” Her voice is pure honey. “Oria called a bit ago. Said you might need some help, and I just got tired of waiting. I mean, you know how impatient—”
“If I wanted you here, I would have sent for you myself.”
He’s fighting love or rage. Holding back frustration or joy.
Willa shakes her head and turns to me. “Do you need help getting your things together?”
“She’s packed,” Oria answers.
She’s right. I am all packed and ready to go.
“No,” Dario barks. “Willa, I’m sorry you came for nothing, but you need to turn the fuck around and go back where you belong.”
“But I’m here.”
“There’s a lot going on. Sarah, go back and—”
“Baby.” Willa tsks playfully while I turn into a pile of broken eggshells.
“Don’t you fucking call me that.”
She tilts her head. “Is that any kind of way to talk to your wife?”
My husband goes white as a sheet. I must look even worse because Willa reacts but directs anger at Dario.
“You didn’t tell her?” Willa’s incredulous. Maybe I should be too.
“Tell me what?” My voice is weak and cracked. My fists are balled around a river of sweat.
“I cannot believe—” Willa starts.
“What didn’t you tell me?” My shout bounces off the walls of the hall.
“Sarah.” He points at me, then the metal door leading to his apartment. “You need to go sit down, and I’ll take care of this.”
“Am I your wife?”
Our eyes are locked together, and someone lost the key.
“Do what I say.”
“Yes or no?”
“Just go!” He tries to stare me to the door, but I do not move.
“Am I your wife?” I’m screaming, rooted to the floor. “Yes or no, Dario.”
“Jesus,” Oria mumbles from the universe outside our gaze.
“Yes or no!”
He breaks the stare. It settles the question of whether or not I’m his wife.
No is a betrayal, and yes is a lie.
