“I’m a little underwhelmed,” Miranda complained as we filed into the Pentagon Briefing Room.

“Give me a moment, I’m considering quitting.”

Miranda whipped her head to me. “Macy, you wouldn’t.”

“No,” I hissed, garnering a look from the general. “I’m just getting tired of the condescending treatment. Why bother to pick me if you don’t believe I can do it?”

“They believe in you. They’re just scared. Red’s here.”

“Red,” I confirmed. She was three rows back, further than I thought she’d be. She smiled tightly at me when she noticed me staring.

  “She doesn’t look happy.”

“She always looks like that,” I dismissed. I couldn’t remember her ever giving me a genuine smile. “None of the others look very happy either.” Just what I needed, a room full of grumpy reporters.

“Here we go,” Miranda hummed softly as the president approached the podium.

The hush that descended over the reporters did nothing to conceal the hunger in their eyes. Here we go indeed. To the brave new world of medicine, where no one had ever attempted what we were about to. Visions of Star Trek danced through my mind as the president’s voice faded. We truly were on the cusp of something fantastic. As long as it didn’t implode.

No implosions, I said to myself. Stick to the script. This launch had to be flawless. And since I was in charge, it would be. I was going to be all over this…like white on rice…like red beans and rice...chips and dip…man I was hungry. Uugh, Greer. Focus. In charge. I was in charge. God help me, I would be Chargezilla!

The fire in my belly fizzled when my eyes landed on Red again, and she raised a single eyebrow in challenge. Crud. I was in so much trouble. God help us all.

  Acknowledgments

Special thanks to Lesley Baker whose effervescent personality breathed hope into the achingly long creative process, and whose time and talents were coopted for the sanity of the author.

Ashley Richardson Boone…ready to promote at a moment’s notice, your eagerness—nay, demand to see this volume completed helped spur me to the finish. Thanks for everything you’ve done.

Thanks to everyone who previewed the manuscript, and every fan that waited, patiently or not, for the publication. I sincerely hope you enjoy it. (And tell your friends about it.)

  Author Bio

  C. E. Glines lives in southeast Texas with her husband, three sons and a dog named Scruffy. Besides the writing, her life is filled with chasing after her boys and one home improvement project after another. She loves to eat and hates to clean. She always enjoys good times with her friends and family and reading a good book, especially when the house is quiet enough to actually read it. She holds a degree in manufacturing engineering and was pursuing a degree in biology when she wrote a book, adding author to her resume. She won’t force her opinion on you, but if you ask, be warned. She also longs for the day when she herself can become a hybrid and eat as much as she wants to and still look good.
