Beautiful Lies rj-1
Part #1 of "Ridley Jones" series by Lisa Unger
Ridley Jones has been living a lie. A mysterious package showed up on her doorstep one morning and the beautiful lie she used to call her life was over. Suddenly, everyone in she knows feels like a stranger. She has no idea who's on her side and who has something to hide—even her new lover, Jake, might have disturbing secrets of his own.
Now she's determined to find out the truth, even if it means risking her life. Ridley embarks on a breathtaking pursuit where every choice she makes sets off a whirlwind of consequences that are as frightening as they are shocking.
From Publishers Weekly Unger's well-crafted, suspenseful debut fiction, in which a bright, resourceful young woman finds her everyday world turned upside down in true Harlan Coben–thriller fashion, is done no favors by this off-kilter audio rendition. The main problem is that reader Lamia sounds a decade younger than the novel's narrator, Ridley Jones. As the book's heroine drifts into and out of jeopardy, fearlessly searching for the truth about her birth and parentage while defying powerful adversaries determined to keep a particularly evil secret, the mood should be noir. Lamia's sound is strictly YA, more girly than gritty. Her performance isn't one note; she makes all the right emotional choices. But she is not vocally versatile enough to do justice to the novel's cast of characters. Asking her to convey the audio image of a rotund, sinister lawyer issuing dire threats, to take one example, is a little like hiring Paris Hilton to stand in for Orson Welles. Not her fault, exactly, if she falls short of the mark.
Black Out
Lisa Unger
When my mother named me Ophelia, she thought she was being literary. She didn't realize she was being tragic. On the surface, Annie Powers's life in a wealthy Floridian suburb is happy and idyllic. Her husband, Gray, loves her fiercely; together, they dote on their beautiful young daughter, Victory. But the bubble surrounding Annie is pricked when she senses that the demons of her past have resurfaced and, to her horror, are now creeping up on her. These are demons she can't fully recall because of a highly dissociative state that allowed her to forget the tragic and violent episodes of her earlier life as Ophelia March and to start over, under the loving and protective eye of Gray, as Annie Powers. Disturbing events-the appearance of a familiar dark figure on the beach, the mysterious murder of her psychologist-trigger strange and confusing memories for Annie, who realizes she has to quickly piece them together before her past comes to claim her future and her daughter.
Twice: A Novel
Lisa Unger
From Publishers WeeklyReaders who like their psychological thrillers complex, melodramatic and almost completely implausible will find Miscione's third Lydia Strong novel (Angel Fire; The Darkness Gathers) right up their alley. Everything comes in pairsâ€"murders of an artist's ex-husbands, possible twin villains, missing twin childrenâ€"to such a degree that the book should have had a second jacket. The novel begins as New Yorker Strong, a true-crime writer, jogs along the streets of lower Manhattan toward the Brooklyn Bridge, worrying about two major dilemmasâ€"she has just learned that she is pregnant, and the psychopath who killed her mother 15 years before is back on the streets and stalking her. Then comes the savage murder of the second husband of famous painter Julian Ross, who lost her first husband in a similar brutal attack 10 years earlier. Hired by the artist's imperious but touching mother to prove that Julian (acquitted by a jury in the first murder) isn't guilty of the second, either, Lydia, lover/partner Jeff Mark and their associates two-step their way through a convoluted plot with more strands than a DNA sample. A certain amount of suspense is generated along the way, especially for readers who can suspend disbelief, but Miscione finally loses her gamble by doubling her ante one time too many.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From BooklistMiscione's third Lydia Strong novel finds the tough-as-nails crime writer pregnant but refusing to slow down despite the fact that Jed McIntyre, the serial killer who murdered Lydia's mother, is on the loose and out for blood--Lydia's, among others. As she jogs through Manhattan, tailed by Aussie bodyguard Dax Chicago, Lydia yearns for the day when Jed is finally out of her life. Meanwhile, the mother of famous New York artist Julian Ross hires Lydia's firm to investigate the murder of Julian's second husband. Some of Miscione's characters are a little overblown--serial murderer McIntyre seems as incapable of dying as the bad guy in a low-budget horror film. However, a fascinating subplot involving the community of homeless people who live in tunnels beneath Manhattan keeps the plot from becoming too cartoonish. And Miscione avoids the temptation to tie up Lydia and her boyfriend-partner Jeff's relationship in a neat little bow. A steadily developing series, not without rough spots but with a strong central character. Jenny McLarinCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Sliver of Truth rj-2
Part #2 of "Ridley Jones" series by Lisa Unger
The highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Lies .
Charged with relentless intensity and kinetic action, and playing out with unnerving suspense on the streets of New York and London, Sliver of Truth delves deep into the shadowy world of Ridley Jones, a terrified but determined young woman at once hunting down a ghost from her past and running for her life.
From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Ridley Jones thought her faux uncle Max (who was actually her father) was long dead. But apparently, no one else did; not the FBI, the Armenian mob, the woman who identified Max's corpse, or Jones's boyfriend, Jake. Each want Max for different reasons, and Jones becomes the tool with which they hope to bring him out into the open. In an effort to figure everything out, Jones recruits contacts, but it seems every time she does, they end up dead. Unger's second novel featuring Jones packs a lot of action, humor and drama. Jenna Lamia improves these elements in this first-person novel with a light, smooth voice that fits with Jones personality. Within the first hour, Lamia's soft tone reverberates with attitude or sincerity depending on the context, while her ability to inject personality into the narrative aspects of the story makes it all the more enjoyable. She tackles accents, gender differentials and sarcasm with great ease, leaving listeners to lose themselves in Unger's tale of intrigue.

Black Out: A Novel

From Publishers WeeklyStarred Review. Annie Powers leads the perfect life in Florida with her husband, Gray, and their four-year-old daughter in this stellar character-driven stand-alone from bestseller Unger (_A Sliver of Truth_). Less than a decade earlier, however, Annie was Ophelia March, the teenage captive—or accomplice—of spree killer Marlowe Geary. Gray, a partner in his father's private security consultant firm, tracked Marlowe and rescued Ophelia after sending the killer's car over a cliff. Reinventing herself with Gray's help, Annie can't remember all that happened during her years with Marlowe, and she's prone to panic attacks and blackouts. When a strange man appears on her property, Annie's sure Marlowe is back. As a shady police detective digs into her past, Annie must try to recover the memories she buried if she's ever going to be free from Marlowe. Unger expertly turns what could have been a routine serial-killer story into a haunting odyssey for Annie, dropping red herrings and clues along the way until the reader feels as unsettled as Annie. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. FromAnnie Powers seems to lead an idyllic suburban life. She has a devoted husband, a cherubic young daughter, and a beautiful home with sweeping views of the Gulf of Florida. But not so many years ago, Annie was entangled in a scenario that was anything but serene. Her emotionally twisted relationship with serial killer Marlowe Geary had turned her from a moody teen into a criminal accomplice with a hardened heart. Only by faking her death and taking on a new identity was Annie able to jettison her past—or so she thought. Her husband, Gray, had long insisted that Marlowe was dead. But after an eerie encounter on the beach, Annie is not so sure. As the cracks in her carefully constructed facade deepen, she flees her family, determined to learn the truth. Annie’s mental state becomes more precarious with each passing day, until she can no longer distinguish what’s imaginary from what’s real. There’s a bit too much shifting between present and past in this stand-alone psychological thriller by Unger, author of the best-selling and critically acclaimed Ridley Jones series. But the author makes up for an occasionally awkward narrative with the compelling character of Annie: dark, troubled, and teetering on the brink. --Allison Block

The Darkness Gathers: A Novel
Lisa Unger
From Publishers WeeklyAfter her well-received debut, Angel Fire (2002), Miscione stumbles in her second thriller to feature true-crime writer and part-time PI Lydia Strong. An anonymous plea for help sends Lydia and ex-FBI agent Jeffrey Mark, her lover and partner, to Miami to investigate the fate of young Tatiana Quinn, who has disappeared from her wealthy home where she lived with her stepfather Nathan Quinn and her Albanian mother. Miscione isn't afraid to think big, and her complicated plot throws her heroes into a case that involves Miami cops, the FBI, a cartel of immensely powerful and wealthy men, snuff films, girls sold into sexual slavery and plenty of enforcers. The action roils from New York to Miami, to Eastern Europe and back to New York with the body count steadily growing. The book's blend of glitz (the author drops brand names faster than you can say Dior), action and a strong female lead will appeal as long as readers are willing to forgive a plot that never begins to convince.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From BooklistThe second in Miscione's series featuring true-crime writer Lydia Strong is a winner. Just back from a book tour, Lydia hopes to spend time with her former-FBI beau, Jeffrey Mark, in their swanky New York City home. Then she opens the mail and finds a strange package containing a tape of a young girl named Tatiana crying for help, accompanied by an anonymous note pleading for Lydia to find the missing girl. She and Jeffrey are soon flying to Miami to meet with the detective in charge of the case. Tatiana's reticent Albanian mother and rich, powerful father hinder Lydia's investigation, as do unseen bad guys who try to shake her off the case. A complex adventure unfolds, involving the Albanian government and a serial killer from Lydia's past. With potential witnesses dropping dead (literally) at her feet, Lydia realizes that she is dealing with a much larger entity than a single kidnapper. An exciting story enriched by a glamorous writer-heroine who carries a Glock and knows how to use it. Jenny McLarinCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
