“I think… we should try going after a powerful monster like the [Spider Queen] or the [Undead King],” Adam said at last, causing Titania, who had been sipping tea, to do a spit take.
S-Rank Quest
Titania gawked at Adam like she couldn’t believe what she had just heard. She even went so far as to put her pinky in her ear as though digging out earwax before asking, “I-I am sorry. I seem to have heard something phenomenally stupid. Could you please repeat that? I must have heard wrong.”
Adam sighed. “No, you heard right. I think we should go after the [Spider Queen] and [Undead King].”
“Are you crazy?!” Titania exploded. “No, don’t answer that. I already know you’re crazy. I knew that from the moment we first met. Are you insane?! Do you really think we can defeat monsters as powerful as the Thirteen Lords of Chaos? We wouldn’t stand a chance as we are now.”
“I think we might stand a chance. Our stats are pretty good now,” Adam said.
“Stats aren’t everything and you know it. Also, our stats might be better than they were, but they pale in comparison to the enemies you want us to fight,” Titania said.
Aris, Fayte, Lilith, and Susan watched the back and forth between Adam and Titania like it was a ping pong tournament. Their heads swiveled back and forth, from one to the other. None of them had interrupted the argument yet, but soon Fayte cleared her throat to catch their attention.
“I’m afraid I don’t know much about these Thirteen Lords of Chaos beyond what little you’ve told me. Can you fill me in? Just how powerful are they?”
“Every member of the Thirteen Lords of Chaos is a 4-Star monster with a level of no less than ninety. You can expect them to have at least over one billion health points and a number of powerful attacks that would kill us in one hit as we are right now. For example, all of the [Spider Queen’s] attacks do no less than fourteen thousand points of damage,” Titania explained.
After listening to Titania’s explanation, Fayte turned to Adam with a dry expression that caused him to look away. He couldn’t bear to see her looking at him like he was a reckless fool.
“Adam,” Fayte said in a patient voice. “You realize there’s no way we can defeat a monster of that caliber right now. Why are you suggesting we fight them?”
“We need to get stronger—stronger than anyone else in the game.” Scratching his elbow, Adam turned to Fayte with a serious expression. “Right now we are barely keeping our lead thanks to the hidden classes we acquired. However, hidden classes and skills can only do so much. We’re still outnumbered by the larger guilds. Unless we can become so powerful individually that we can take on entire armies, we’re not going to survive when Levon Pleonexia comes after us.”
“Well, you’re not wrong,” Fayte admitted with a frown.
Aris raised her hand. “I’m with Adam. I think we should fight these Lords of Chaos. It sounds fun.”
“Of course you’re on Adam’s side,” Fayte grumbled. Susan giggled a little, which caused everyone to look at her. The poor girl squeaked when she noticed all the attention on her and burrowed backward into the couch, but Fayte just smiled at the girl. “What do you think, Su?”
“M-me? Oh. Um. You know I… I think you both have good points,” Susan said hesitantly. Fayte prodded her to continue, which caused the youngest of them to come out of her shell a bit more. “Adam is right. We do need to get much stronger. A lot of the top players have already caught up to our level, and it won’t be long before those under them do as well. However, I don’t think we should rush it either. Fighting someone like the [Spider Queen] might yield a lot of experience points, but it also comes with harsh consequences if we die.”
Adam rubbed the back of his neck. He hadn’t thought of that, but Susan was right. If they died, players would lose all of their experience points and drop a level. They’d be in an even worse position than before if that happened. There was also Kureha and Titania to consider. If they died, that was it. Unlike other games where NPC party members could be revived when the player died, they didn’t do that in this game.
“I guess I didn’t think of the consequences,” Adam said with a small sigh. “Still, we can’t afford to just take normal quests. They don’t give us enough experience to level up quickly. If only we could find another dungeon like the Magic Academy.”
The Magic Academy had monsters that were all at a very high level, but the one Adam was most interested in was the boss. Alexandra Mystique had been a level 50 4-Star enemy. She was powerful enough that she gave them a lot of experience points for defeating her, but she wasn’t so powerful that they couldn’t win. Adam firmly believed they could defeat her even more easily now that they all had a hidden class and had leveled up.
“Maybe we should head over to the Guild Association and see if they have any special quests for us?” suggested Fayte.
Quests in this world were given to them by the Guild Association, who was in charge of managing all the quests people from across the continent had for guilds. Whenever they wanted new quests, they headed over to the Guild Association office in Solum and perused through a variety of quests until they found one they wanted.
“I think it’s a good idea,” Susan said.
“It’s a much better idea than going after monsters we have no hope of defeating,” Titania added with a sour look at Adam.
“I’m fine with it,” Lilith said quietly. At some point, she had snatched Kureha from Adam’s lap and was stroking the fox yokai’s delicate fur. She looked so content that Adam couldn’t bring himself to take Kureha back.
“I still think Adam’s idea is better, but if that’s what everyone else has decided on, then I’ll agree to it,” Aris said with a pout as she crossed her arms.
Everyone turned to look at Adam next. He felt like their stares were putting him on the spot, but he knew what they wanted from him. Some part of him still believed fighting powerful enemies like the [Spider Queen] would yield the best results. The rest of him understood that he just really wanted to fight her. Adam disliked the fact that he had been forced to flee last time, so now he wanted to go back and defeat her.
He had always been a sore loser.
“Let’s see what quests are available at the Guild Association,” he said at last with a sigh.
This was why he normally played solo.
There were a total of twenty-four rooms inside of their guild house. Seventeen of them were bedrooms located on the second floor. On the first floor were the kitchen, living room, a unisex bath, a vault for their items and gold, and a training hall. Among the rooms available, the training hall was the largest. It was 100 meters across and 80 meters wide. It looked a lot like the kind of training halls people expected to see at places where people practiced fencing, with soft mats on the floor to lessen the harshness of impacts when falling and an array of basic weapons hanging from racks. Adam was a little surprised they had something like this in Age of Gods.
Of course, he and the others were heading up to the third floor.
Unlike the first two floors, which were dedicated to living space and sleeping, the third floor only had two rooms.
The smaller of the two was an office. Fayte used it to store various files regarding their activities, taxes, maps, and other items that were necessary to run a guild. One of the more interesting facets of this game was that guilds in Age of Gods were run a lot like companies in the real world. Running a guild was just like running a business.
Of course, Adam and the others were not headed for the office but the last room.
Larger than the office but smaller than the training hall on floor one, the room they walked into looked like a simple unadorned space that served no purpose. The only thing this room had was a small platform at its very center. If someone were to look at it, they would have said it looked like a magic circle, and indeed, it was covered in all kinds of magical-looking symbols that Adam couldn’t make heads or tails of.
“All right. Let’s get on the [Warp Pad] and head to the Guild Association,” Fayte said.
[Warp Pads] were, according to lore, lost magic that transported people from one pad to another corresponding pad. The term “lost magic” made it sound like it was something that no longer existed. In this case, however, what it meant was there was no one alive who could create more of these [Warp Pads]. There were apparently only a few hundred of them in existence and they cost a pretty penny of 4.5 billion gold coins. The only reason they had one was that it was part of their reward for forming the first guild.
They all stepped onto the [Warp Pad], which activated with a thrum. Adam felt the hairs on his neck and arm stand on end. He blinked once, and in that time, the area around them had changed. No longer were they standing inside of an unadorned room. Now they were inside of a smaller room made of stone.
