From the back, my father’s voice boomed across the crowd. “If you don’t kiss her, I’ll consider it an insult.” The crowd laughed nervously, but turned back to us to see how Leonardo would respond.

Laughing, Leonardo slid my mother’s ring on my finger and stood, staring into my eyes. “I’d be happy to, Dad, but I need to get the answer from Mia first.” He didn’t release me from his hold as he reached out with his other hand and enclosed my fingers in his. Someone standing beside us took the microphone from him and held it near his mouth.

I glanced at my hand in his and then met his gaze. The microphone moved closer to me and before I could dwell on the fact that it would conduct my answer to the entire room, I replied. “Only if you promise to dance with me later.”

“Tesoro, my only sweetheart, I’ll be dancing with you the rest of our lives.” He pulled me into his embrace and when our lips connected, an explosion of applause erupted around us as if in sync with the implosion of emotion roaring through me.

I hoped I would never lose that spark for Leonardo. He was my forbidden step-brother and I was his contracted wife.

We were both right where we wanted to be.

  Epilogue

  Angelo

The wedding was set for early July and Angelo didn’t want to spend one minute around the happy couple or around his father.

Something was amiss in the Italian community and he couldn’t put his finger on it. There was a spy among them and the last thing Angelo needed was to worry about someone else corrupting their operations while worrying about the Bianchis and the Capones who didn’t agree with the union.

As much as Angelo loved his sister, there were some things he couldn’t allow. If she was giving information to her husband or to the step-father, Angelo would have to treat her accordingly. Treason or betrayal of any kind was unforgiveable in his book.

There would be no going back, if that was the case.

He drove past his sister’s house in Bellevue. The night had long since darkened the sky and he wouldn’t have to incorporate her home in his nightly rounds anymore. She was selling the home and moving in with Leonardo.

Angelo couldn’t say he blamed her. There was something safe in Little Italy, something comforting. He’d never wanted to leave. Too bad he couldn’t find someone to bind his heart to.

But love was a weakness and he didn’t believe in weaknesses. At least not for himself.

He had too much to do with the Rossi name. Angelo had plans. He just had to take the business from his father and he’d be set as he took it larger and more powerful than anyone else ever had.

Nothing and no one was going to get in his way.
