The Possibility Palace
As the lights flickered back on, Lara looked at her empty hand. There was no sign of Dominic. He’d been there one second, and then gone in another.
As if he never had been here.
He hadn’t. Lara knew that. She knew that he was one of the Missing. The thousands who’d disappeared after Pinochet came to power. Gone, never found. She knew why he was missing, and who was at fault. But that would have to come later.
Because now, she knew her own story. All of it. She knew what the Fifth Floor was.

1776 Staten Island Peace Conference
FOUR DAYS AFTER THE PEACE CONFERENCE, General Howe landed on Manhattan Island and completed the occupation of New York City, defeating General Washington and forcing him to Westchester and the Battle of White Plains. After losing that battle, Washington retired his troops to New Jersey.
Benjamin Franklin was indeed invited to play chess by General and Admiral Howe’s sister while he was in London. History does not record her motives. Or his. But the Admiral and Franklin did spend considerable time discussing Franklin’s ‘Hints’.
The Howe’s older brother, George, was killed during the Seven Years War at the Battle of Carillon. He is the only British peer to have a burial marker in the United States. The Massachusetts Assembly paid to have a monument made to him in Westminster Abbey. It reads:
THE PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETS BAY, IN NEW ENGLAND BY AN ORDER OF THE GREAT AND GENERAL COURT BEARING DATE FEBy; 1st: 1759, CAUSED THIS MONUMENT TO BE ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGE AUGUSTUS LORD VISCOUNT HOWE, BRIGADIER GENERAL OF HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES IN AMERICA, WHO WAS SLAIN JULY THE 6th 1758, ON THE MARCH TO TICONDEROGA, IN THE 34th YEAR OF HIS AGE: IN TESTIMONY OF THE SENSE THEY HAD OF HIS SERVICES AND MILITARY VIRTUES, AND OF THE AFFECTION THEIR OFFICERS AND SOLDIERS BORE TO HIS COMMAND. HE LIVED RESPECTED AND BELOVED: THE PUBLICK REGRETTED HIS LOSS; TO HIS FAMILY IT IS IRREPARABLE.
The Revolutionary War was not officially over until the Treaty of Paris on 3 September 1783. Earlier that year, George Washington had to put down a coup amongst his officers on 15 March 1783 at the Newburgh Cantonment. This was Eagle’s mission in Ides of March.

9 AD Teutoberg Forest
While Rome mounted several expeditions east of the Rhine River in the years following, it never attempted a permanent settlement on that side of the River, keeping it as its boundary. The battle ended Roman expansion in Northern Europe.
Eventually, the tribes there, including the Vandals and the Goths, would become part of the force that destroys the Roman Empire.
The Emperor Augustus, upon being informed of the disaster, was reported to bash his head against the wall of his palace repeatedly, crying out "Quintili Vare, legiones redde!“ ('Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!').

Eventually, the standards of all three legions were recoveredby Roman expeditions against the Germanic tribes. The last was recovered in 41 AD. No Roman legion was ever numbered XVII (17) and XIX (19) again, something unique in Roman history. XVIII (18) was briefly used again.
In 50 AD, over forty years after the Battle, some Romans from Varus’ command, still held prisoners by the Germans, were liberated from slavery.

1973 Chile
The coup in Chile led to a very dark time in that country’s history. The official tally is 2,279 killed; 1,248 ‘disappeared’, 28,000 tortured, 250,000 people detained, 38,254 imprisoned and over 200,000 people sent into exile. It took until 1988 for Chile to return to democracy. The “Leahy Law” was passed in the United States prohibiting military assistance to military units and members of foreign security forces that violate human rights.
The movie Missing was made about one of the Americans killed in the aftermath of the coup, Charles Horman. Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon were both nominated for Academy Awards.

On 21 September 1976, an opponent of General Pinochet, Orlando Letelier, who had been Allende’s ambassador to the United States, was assassinated by Chilean secret police in Washington DC., a brazen act.
Out of office, Pinochet traveled to Britain in 1998 where he was arrested for human rights violations, the first time a former head of state had ever been charged without a charge from his home country. He was allowed to return to Chile because of health reasons. He died in 2006.

According to official records, no one ever received the 25 million dollar bounty on Osama Bin Laden. For Neeley’s version of the mission and what happens afterward at Deep Six and with Cherry Tree: Nighstalkers: Book of Truths.
1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre
The outbreak of the Civil War caused the investigation of the massacre to be delayed for a number of years. On 23 March 1877, John D. Lee was executed on the site of the massacre; the sole person to be punished for the murders. The LDS Church had initially denied any involvement by Mormons. Since then it has acknowledged its role.
A monument has been erected in Mountain Meadows to the victims.

2001 The An-225 and Tsar Bomba
There is only one An-225 known to be operational. It did set a weight and altitude record on 11 September 2001, which still stands. It is still flying and doing contract work. There is a casing for another Tsar Bomba on display in Russia. Because it was felt such a large weapon was not practical in military terms, no equivalent nuclear bomb has ever been made; that’s the official word.
