“Good! Now, someone, tell me what the hell happened?”

“Ma’am. I don’t understand it, but we exited the wormhole well inside the gravity well. That should not be possible.”

“We need answers; what could have made our wormhole collapse?”

  “We’re still studying the logs.”

  ◆ ◆ ◆

“Ma’am, the logs show a reflection of a gravimetric wave coming from the sun.”

  “A reflection?”

“Yes, ma’am. There must have been a significant gravimetric event recently. The reflection is just coming in so that would indicate that the event coincided with the collapse of our wormhole.”

“Shit!” Catie said. “Oh, sorry.” Catie had come onto the bridge to see if she could help figure out what had happened. She was still exhausted by the four hours of emergency deceleration.

“It’s quite alright, Princess. Did you realize something?”

“ADI, reconstruct where all the debris is coming from.”

“Yes, Cer Catie. . . . All the debris is radiating from the location where our wormhole collapsed. If I reconstruct the object, it appears that there was a large moon there before the event.”

“Something must have broken that moon apart, or maybe an asteroid collided with it.”

“How could a moon break apart?”

  “I don’t know.”

“Ma’am. We’re getting a distress signal,” the communications officer announced.

  “From where?”

“It appears there is a spaceship about 0.25 AUs from here. It looks like a basic SOS, a short repeating signal with little content.”

“It appears that the ship is on a ballistic course. They are not maneuvering, and there is a significant amount of debris heading their way,” ADI said.

“So, you think they’ve lost control?”

“If they still had control, they would be trying to move toward the less dense area of the debris field.”

Captain McAvoy turned to Kasper. “Kasper, launch eight Foxes without pilots. Max acceleration. Let’s clear a path for that ship.”

  ◆ ◆ ◆

Catie went to her cabin and threw herself onto the padded bench. “Why . . . why do I get stuck in a system where a moon blows up? Hey, if you’re listening, how about a little romance? Why can’t I meet a prince charming? I could use a little fun once in a while. Why can’t we find a unicorn or a planet where everyone loves each other?!”

  Afterword

  Thanks for reading Delphi Embassy!

  Acknowledgments

It is impossible to say how much I am indebted to my beta readers and copy editors. Without them, you would not be able to read my books due to all the grammar and spelling errors. I have always subscribed to Andrew Jackson’s opinion that “It is a damn poor mind that can think of only one way to spell a word.”

  So special thanks to:

My copy editor Ann Clark, who also happens to be my wife.

My beta reader and editor, Theresa Holmes.

My beta reader and cheerleader, Roger Blanton, who happens to be my brother.
