“We’re clear,” she announced. “Visitors are departing.”
“They really likely to go hunting those fool cowboys?” Fin asked from the bridge.
“I hope so,” Tessa said.
“Why is that, Captain?” Laney asked.
“Astoria could be a nice place,” Tessa replied. “I’m not all that keen about the authorities arresting all the brokers and fixers, because the economy would collapse overnight, but not having to walk around with a gun on my hip all the time would be a pleasant change.”
Laney nodded.
“Baramunz can be like that,” she said. “And Falorea.”
“Both, I’m certain, are lovely places,” Tessa said. “For someone with pale skin and much lighter hair. Not for me. I’d rather make a living out here.”
“Are you ever likely to return to the Arles Region?” Laney asked.
“There’s nothing for me there,” Tessa said. “Only lost dreams best left buried.”
“Lost dreams, Captain?” Laney pressed.
“Lost everything,” Tessa acknowledged. “Gone and buried. As Constanz said, family is whatever you have to do to make it. All the family I have left is aboard this ship.”
Laney wanted to scoff at that. It was there in her eyes. Still, the woman held her tongue.
Like the McLarens, she might have also finally found a place she belonged.
