“The answer is down there, buddy. I just have to figure out how to get to it. And he’ll know I’m looking.” My mind turns over. In an ideal scenario, how would I get him? Should I talk to everyone who’s ever worked for Mr. Drew? No, I don’t believe they’ll tell me anything I don’t already know. What I need to understand to catch him is how the operation works. How does he recruit these men? Where do they go to deliver? If one of them needs to be a missing person, how does Mr. Drew recruit someone to kill them, or does he manage it himself? The men who run drugs for him will never tell me—he’d kill them. He’s clever enough I’m not sure I can trick him into telling me, either.

As the train rolls into the Seward station and the cabs slowly travel across the little town, I realize I need to be able to watch Mr. Drew. Closely. Without him knowing I’m there. I take that idea, turn it over, and give myself permission to follow it down the rabbit hole. How could it be done? What would I need?

By the time I stand back up, wiping the earth from the seat of my hiking pants, I know what I need from Mikey. He and Anna will be the only people who can know. As far as the rest of Seward is concerned, I’ll be leaving in just a couple days. I’ll need to make a show of my good-bye, so Mr. Drew believes I’ve returned to Anchorage. And then I’ll be free to watch and wait as long as necessary. I’ll catch him in the act. It’s the only way.

I slap my hand against my thigh, and Tails turns to follow me down the mountain. Before we go, I turn my face to the summit of Mount Marathon, wild and beautiful and slightly foreboding even in summer. A breeze blows and the fine white powder catches, uncovering the bones of those who are not found. The flakes circle between rock peaks, trapped, until they settle, covering them again.
