Rast was the last to say goodbye. He shook Damon’s hand and thanked him for his hard work during the ritual, and then squeezed me tightly. “Check on your father, but do not be discouraged if his recovery takes a few days. You should see an improvement fairly quickly, but he has been sick for a very long time and it may be a few weeks before he is feeling one hundred percent again. If he is showing no signs of improvement at all in a few days, please contact me as quickly as possible.”
“Thank you, Rast, for everything. I can’t thank you enough.”
“It was a pleasure, Delaney Jones. You make your mother proud.” He chucked my chin, then disappeared into the river.
“Well, Damon, are you ready to go home?” I turned to look at him, but he wasn’t paying attention. He stood completely frozen, his gaze unfocused. I poked him, and he shook himself. “What’s going on, Damon? Where did you go there?”
“Something’s wrong.”
“What do you mean, something’s wrong? We took care of the Black Walker and kept the vampires from killing you and Jeanette. You prevented all the werewolves from being blown up, and took care of the Order of the Roman guys. What else could we possibly have left to deal with?”
“I don’t know, Delaney, but I can feel it. Something is definitely wrong. We should go find Jeanette and let her know.” He started walking back to the car, and I followed. “I don’t know what it is,” he continued. “I just have this weird feeling that something isn’t quite right. I’m still getting used to these powers. I haven’t totally figured them out yet. But Jeanette will probably know what’s going on.”
“Yeah, and maybe she’ll even tell us.”
