I had a number of early beta readers who volunteered their time and energy to give feedback, including Margaret Smith, Tiffany Smith-Fraser, Barbara Clarke-Nolan, and of course, Laura Kennedy. I also turned to a much larger second round of beta readers near the novel’s conclusion, and their feedback helped me learn to trust my instincts. I’d make special mention of my mom (although she prefers to be called Mum), who continues to be my biggest fan.
I would also like to thank my agent, Linda Langton, and my publisher, Reagan Rothe. This novel wouldn’t have happened without either of them, and along the way they’ve taught me about the business of publishing, an area where I know I can improve.
My family, of course, also deserves recognition. They teach me something about myself almost every day, if I’m perceptive enough to notice. My wife Tabatha gave me the time to write, and pushed me to keep going on my off days, or when it seemed I’d forgotten how to string a sentence together. From her, I’ve learned how to support someone else’s dream, and I hope I can do the same for her. My daughters gave me the inspiration for this story, and from them, I’ve learned how to stop taking myself so seriously, and how to be passionate about storytelling.
Lastly, I’d like to thank you, Dear Reader. The more I write, the more I learn what an awesome commitment it is to give of one’s time to read a book. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alastair Luft writes out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. Alastair’s first book, The Battle Within, was published in 2017. A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada, and a 20-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, Alastair is also an accomplished speaker who has presented on how violence begets violence and the importance of discovering one’s passion.
