  “How do I do that?”

“You have a government source, don’t you?” King smiled. “Just allude to it being in Britain’s best interest, maybe even part of the plan all along. Britain doing the right thing for the people of Burindi.”

“And that will take the heat off you, too.”

“Couldn’t hurt,” King replied. He leaned in and kissed her cheek, savouring the softness of her skin, the warmth of her breath on his cheek. Then he pulled away and turned to Stewart who was still staring at the two bodies on the floor and trying to comprehend what had just transpired under his watch. “Come on, Boss. It’s time to get the hell out of here.”

“You kept me in the dark…” Stewart said quietly, still looking at the hole in Mugabe’s forehead. The man’s head was tilted awkwardly, his lifeless eyes fixed on the desk he so wanted to sit behind.

“Call it payback for the cyanide,” King replied coldly. “This is the better way, and you know it.”

  “What made you do it?”

“Conscience. Living with my actions.” King shrugged. “When I thought about it, I was left with two options. What was right, and what was easy. The easy path is nearly always the one not to take.”

Stewart watched King walk out past the confused civil servants, the bodyguards unsure what to do and looking to Redwood and his team for guidance, not that any was forthcoming. Stewart followed, ignoring Lucinda Davenport, who had finished photographing the two corpses and was now focusing her attentions on Desmond Lambadi behind the expansive desk where he had once promised great things. He hoped for King’s sake that the man would fulfil his once revered political manifesto and grant Britain a similar mineral deal to that of Mugabe’s. The alternative did not bear thinking about. King would either return to the UK an anonymous hero, or the next target on Stewart’s books. Only time would tell.
