Travis, as always, is conflicted, trying to balance the paranormal with the normal.

To Chaiko, living in the prehistoric world, existence is hard enough. Become injured and life becomes nearly impossible. What does he have to do to regain worth and status? Sharpened by misfortune and need, his intelligence is the only tool to help find his way in an often hostile world. Yet the challenges he faces cause him to grow in unexpected and satisfying ways.

In Dreamcast a young art-student in college, Travis, has a nightmare about the murder of an ex-girlfriend. The next day, to his horror, he discovers that the dream was all too true. When, during the police interview, he naively confesses the dream, he is arrested for having exact knowledge of the crime. In jail, he is harangued by two hard-nosed detectives who try to extract a confession.
With the help of a psychologist assigned to assess his mental competence, Travis discovers that he has psychic abilities that have been masked by an artistic overlay. Travis has a hard time accepting his psychic potential, and is slow to use them in his own defense. As a complication, he becomes attracted to the psychologist who is ten years older than him. He feels she is his one real support in midst of the system trying to fast track him into prison.
Gradually he learns, but it takes all of his psychic intuition and initiative to fight for himself while trapped in jail. In this follow-up to Dreamcast, Travis teams up with Amanda and tries to have a normal life, if only his paranormal sensitivity would let him. He senses dark purposes around him, and knowing what he knows, is compelled by his sense of responsibility to do something about them. Of course, this always gets him into trouble.

In case 1, Travis fights off a murderer who also has paranormal abilities, perhaps more powerful than his own.

In case 2, Travis attempt to correct a tragic event but gets stuck himself.

In case 3, Travis inadvertently accepts an assignment from a crime family for insane amount of money and has to extricate himself from a deathtrap.

In case 4, Travis helps Amanda with one of her therapy clients, once again only to stumble over murder and abuse.

These cases are woven around his balancing act of trying to lead a semi-normal life. He gets married and has children and a mortgage. Travis attends a Psychic Conference in the hope of meeting someone like himself. What he finds is a beautiful woman who has a very strange request for him. Travis struggles hard with the temptation and suspects she might be paranormal herself. Then murder interrupts, which Travis has to help with even though the police suspect him and his talents.

Chance Fraser, orphaned, grew up working on the canals of industrial England. He foils a kidnapping and rescues Emily, the young daughter of a wealthy family, but doesn't reveal himself to her. He meets her ten years later, serving on a steamship which she takes to Egypt to join her husband. In Tunis she gets into trouble and is accused of spying. Again Chance rescues her. Skipping forward ten years, Chance is wounded and gets captured in the siege of Vicksburg in the Civil War and is locked up in Helmira, the notorious prison camp. He gets sick, and this times, Emily nurses him back to health. Again they are separated and lose track of each other. Chance works on the transcontinental railroad then ends up in the gold fields of British Columbia panning for gold. When he strikes it rich, he goes looking for her.

Mitch, a rootless young man, is betrayed by his "friends," and dragged into a vicious rape and assault crime, for which he is sentenced to 25 years. He tries to survive in jail and prove his innocence. Nothing works for him until an organization dedicated to correct the wrongs of the justice system takes interest in his case. When the person they send to work with him is a young attractive woman, things get really complicated for Mitch.

In this follow-up to the Dreamcast series, using his paranormal abilities, Travis fights crime, albeit often reluctantly.
In case 7, Travis searches for a missing girl.

In case 8, on a holiday cruise, Travis and his family are hijacked by modern-day pirates.

In case 9, after his father's death, Travis has a mental breakdown. While recovering in hospital, he solves a case of body parts smuggling.

In case 10, during a visit to the Big City, Travis gets drawn into trying to stop a serial killer.

As always, Travis is much conflicted, between wishing for a normal life and the reality of the unusual compelling him to fight.

In the third book of the series, Chaiko visits the aggressive Tolmecs to fulfill the agreement that ended a war between them. There Chandar meets Tara, the warrior girl. Barely home, Chaiko takes Dawn on a long journey back to her people, the Ekulan, to show that she had survived the Great Fire. What could be simpler than to meet family? But nothing is simple when cultures collide.
