Young Adult / Fantasy / Mystery

This is a story that happens while Duke Kellin is gone from The Rose Throne, so concurrent with the rest of the novel.Bugsy first appears in my short story "East Village" as a 16-year-old runaway living near Tompkins Square Park in 1967. Here we meet him again exactly one decade later and his circumstances have changed dramatically. If you don't set a course in life, you begin to drift, which has good and bad aspects. This story takes place in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, twin-cities dominated by the biggest university in Illinois. Many graduates hang around town for a few years after graduation trying to figure out a next move.

His Right Hand

Mette Ivie Harrison

Young Adult / Fantasy / Mystery

In Draper, Utah, a tight-knit Mormon community is thrown into upheaval when their ward's second counselor, one of the bishop's right-hand men, is found dead in an elaborately staged murder on church property. Carl Ashby was known as a devout Mormon, a pillar of the community, a loving husband and father. Who would want him dead? Linda Wallheim, the wife of the ward's bishop, can't rest as long as the ward is suffering. She is particularly worried about Carl's grieving family. But the entire case is turned upside down by the autopsy report, which reveals Carl Ashby was a biological woman. In the Mormon church, where gender is considered part of a person's soul, some people regard transgenderism as one of the worst possible transgressions of faith. Church officials seem to be more upset by Carl's gender than by his murder, and more concerned with hushing up the story than with solving the crime. Linda realizes that if the police are to catch the killer, they are...

For Time and All Eternities

Mette Ivie Harrison

Young Adult / Fantasy / Mystery

Mormon bishop's wife Linda Wallheim knows a bit about the LDS church's history of polygamy, but for mainstream Mormons, that epoch ended in the 1890s. However, there are still sects of fundamentalist Mormons who still practice "the Principle of plural marriage"—in fact, some of them are living in plain sight here in Utah. And now Linda's son Kenneth is marrying a young woman who was raised in a polygamist family. Linda isn't sure what to expect—will her future daughter-in-law wear 19th-century style long-sleeved prairie dresses and fix her hair in a bouffant braid, like the FLDS women on TV? No, Naomi Cannon is a modern woman, currently in medical school to become an OBGYN, and she seems like a good match for Kenneth—even if they have both left the Mormon faith. Linda is very curious about polygamy, though, and now, her future daughter-in-law, Naomi, has presented the perfect excuse for Linda to visit a polygamous compound and satisfy her...
