"Coffee can be bitter if you don't put any sugar in it. Myself, I don't mind it this way. You can't tell me you've never had coffee before."

"If all coffee tastes like this, this will be my first and last cup of it."

Dana chuckled. “Here, try adding some sugar before you pass final judgment.” She pushed the glass bowl that held sugar packets toward him.

In fascination, she watched Mahes add six packets of sugar to his coffee. After stirring it vigorously, he lifted it to his mouth to take a sip. Dana thought to warn him that he may have gone too far the other way, but decided not to say anything as he took a huge gulp. He shuddered as it went down.

  "Was that any better?"

"Not really. There's not enough sugar in the world to make that disgusting brew taste good. I think I'll stick to tea. It's only slightly better than this, but at least I can tolerate the way it tastes."

First it was pizza, now coffee. Dana was pretty sure Egypt had both those things. She couldn't help but feel it was strange that a man Mahes’ age hadn't experienced either of them before now. But since she didn't know exactly where he lived in Egypt, she really had nothing to base her assumptions on.

Finishing her coffee in record time, Dana decided they had all they needed from the mall. Walking back to her car with Mahes, she thought it wouldn't be such a bad idea to meet his brother. Having to make the road trip to Memphis would be the perfect time to learn more about her lover. Being confined in a car for hours at a time tended to bring people closer together, or drive them crazy. Either way, by the end of the trip, she would know him better than she did now.

Mahes sat and watched the scenery go by. He couldn't believe how easy it had been to get Dana to agree to go and meet Nefertem. He had been racking his brain about how he was going to suggest the trip to her. Who knew it would be that easy?

Turning to look at Dana's profile, he followed the line of her jaw to the slim column of her throat. He felt drawn to her. None of those other women who had tried to catch his attention in the shopping mall compared to Dana. He had seen the way they looked at him, but for the first time in his long existence, he felt uncomfortable with the unwanted attention. And he knew if he reacted in any way, Dana wouldn't have taken too kindly to it.

Shifting his gaze further down her body, his eyes rested on the outline of her breast. Her breasts were the perfect size. Just thinking about how it felt to caress them, to suck them deep inside his mouth, made him want to taste them again. His body swelled to the aching point, making his jeans suddenly feel too tight. With reluctance, he pulled his eyes away from Dana's chest. Mahes then noticed her give him a quick look before she once more focused her attention onto the road.

  "Stop doing that, Mahes."

"What exactly was I doing that you want me not to do again?"

"You were staring at me as if you wanted to devour me."

Mahes wasn't going to deny that he was thrilled Dana felt uncomfortable under his regard. “I can't help it. Is it a crime that I want to taste every inch of you?"

Dana's fingers tightened their hold on the steering wheel, causing her knuckles to turn white. “It is if you make me have an accident and I total somebody's car."

"Then I suggest you get us back to your place quickly. I want you again.” Mahes’ voice came out sounding husky with need.

Swearing under her breath, Dana slammed her foot down on the gas petal. In what seemed like record time, she was pulling into her parking space in the underground garage at her condo. Mahes collected up all the shopping bags from the backseat before coming around to Dana's side. With his free hand, he hauled her up against his chest and claimed her lips in a demanding kiss. Pulling away he simply said, “Hurry."

Hands shaking with need, Dana tried to get the key into the lock of the security door that opened to the inside of the building. Mahes was tempted to push her aside and do it himself, but she managed to turn the lock on her second try. Racing to the elevator they both pushed the up button at the same time. Luckily the elevator was already at the ground floor. The doors slid open as they hurried inside.

Once inside Dana's condo, Mahes kicked the door shut behind them and let the shopping bags drop where he stood. One big step was all he needed to reach Dana and roughly pull her to him. He groaned as he pushed his way inside her mouth. He could taste the coffee she had consumed on her tongue. He found he didn't mind the taste of coffee as long as it had been in Dana's mouth first.

He knew they weren't going to make it to the bedroom this time. The urge to take her, possess her, was riding him too hard. Backing her toward the couch in the living room, he pushed her down onto it so she half lay, half sat on it. Going down on his knees between her sprawled legs, he made short work of removing her shirt and jeans. With his heart thudding in his ears, Mahes stared down at Dana. His eyes roamed over the sheer lace bra and panties she wore. He could just barely see her nipples through the lacy scraps of material.

Bending forward, he swirled his tongue around each nipple, dampening the lace of her bra. Dana arched beneath him. He ran his tongue down the valley of her breasts. It was then that he found her bra did up at the front. It didn't take much effort on his part to work the hook free, baring her breasts to his view. He pushed the straps down Dana's arms, freeing her of it, before he once more turned his attention back to her breasts.

Using his teeth, he tugged on the peaked nipple, causing it to tighten even more. Mahes swirled his tongue around it once then sucked it deep inside his mouth. Dana moaned and arched her back, pushing herself against him.

Running his hand down across her ribs to her flat stomach, Mahes worked his hand under the waistband of Dana's panties. Dipping a finger between her nether lips, he found her pussy already wet. He knew she would be more than ready for him, but he wanted to taste all of her. He moved out between her legs only long enough to pull her panties off before pushing her legs further apart. Lifting her slightly up off the couch, he stroked her with his tongue. Dana's hips jerked in response. Mahes wanted to push her to her limits and beyond. He flicked her clit with the tip of his tongue. She gasped and clutched at his head, threading her fingers through his hair.

He continued to lick her, as her scent and taste filled his senses. His cock, already fully erect, ached to be inside her, but he wanted her to reach her pleasure first. Using his fingers to open her even more to his attentions, Mahes moved his tongue in and out of her wet core. Dana's moans grew more fevered the closer she came to her climax. When she was almost at the point of no return, he pushed two fingers deep inside her slick core as he sucked on her clit. Dana's hips bucked as her orgasm ripped through her.

Not giving her body a chance to recover, Mahes shed his jeans, pulled her bottom closer to the edge of the couch and sheathed his aching cock inside her with one stroke. With hands on her hips, he kept her from moving as he fought the urge to spill inside her. He groaned as she squeezed his shaft with her inner muscles.

When he finally allowed himself to move in her, he pulled back until only the very tip of his cock was inside her welcoming heat. Inch by slow inch, he pushed back inside until he was sheathed to the hilt. He continued the slow pace until they both wanted more. Mahes increased the pace by slow degrees, as he rammed into her, rubbing his pelvic bone against her clit. He could feel his climax rising ever higher. Wanting Dana to come the same time he did, Mahes leaned forward and sucked greedily at her breast.

Pumping his hips faster, Mahes felt Dana's inner walls clamping down along the length of his shaft, milking him. He rode her until his climax tore through him. Breathing hard, he collapsed on top of Dana, thinking sex had never been so good. When she wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight, Mahes realized he never wanted to let her go.

They had moved from the living room and were now snuggled together on Dana's bed. Even though Mahes had his eyes closed, she could tell he wasn't asleep. She rested her chin on his chest and stared u
p at him. She was afraid she was falling for him hard. He was everything she had ever wanted in a man. He listened to her, and never made her feel as if she had said something she shouldn't have. That he was incredible in bed was an added bonus. Smiling, Dana ran her finger along his firm jaw.

Mahes captured her finger and led it to his mouth, gently nipping it with his teeth. “What are you smiling about?"

"Nothing specific. I just feel like smiling."

Taking hold of her arm, he pulled until she ended up sprawled across his chest. He smiled back at her. “I'll take full credit for putting that smile there."

Dana shook her head. “Not very conceited, are we?"

  "I do try."

"I refuse to make your ego any bigger by praising your prowess in bed. Let's change the subject."

"If we must,” Mahes said with a hint of amusement in his voice.

"How about you tell me more about your brother and his family? You never did tell me what his name is. I know his wife's name, but I don't know your brother's."

  "It's Nefertem."

  "You're kidding, right?"

Mahes shook his head. “No. My brother's name is really Nefertem."

"So just like the god you're named after, you have an older brother named Nefertem as well. Your parents must really love ancient Egypt to have named both their sons after gods."

  "You could say that."

"And you said they have a baby daughter?"

"Yes. Her name is Cleo. She's a month old and she already has Nefertem wrapped around her little finger."

"As it should be. Will he and Kendra mind if I show up unannounced? I would hate to put them out when they have a small baby to look after."

"They won't mind. Knowing Nefertem, he would be very upset if I showed up without you."

"I find that hard to believe, considering we just met. As far as I know, you haven't even been in contact with your brother since you arrived here."

"Then you thought wrong.” At Dana's questioning look, Mahes added, “I phoned my brother last night after you went to bed. It was a collect call so you don't have to worry about the long distance charges."

Dana was a little surprised Mahes had made the phone call while she had been asleep. Not that she minded though. If she had been more on the ball last night, she would have asked him whether he wanted, or needed, to call anyone. She had assumed there wasn't anyone he wanted to talk to when he had told her she was the only person he knew in the city.

"So you told Nefertem about me when you talked to him on the phone?"

"I told him I was staying at your place, but he got the feeling I was interested in you and insisted I bring you along."

"I have to say your brother is very astute."

Mahes scowled. “More than I like him to be at times. In this case, I don't mind, but there are times when I wish he wasn't so in tune with others around him."

"Maybe he feels as if he has to keep an eye on his little brother."

"I hope not. I can take care of myself without the added burden of Nefertem constantly looking over my shoulder."

"At least you have a brother. I'm an only child. When I was growing up, I would have loved to have a sister or brother."

Mahes ran his hand up and down her back in a comforting motion. “That must have been hard. What about your parents? What were they like?"

"Actually it was just me and my Mom when I was growing up. As for my father, I have no idea who he was. Mom never told me his name."

  "Where is your Mom now?"

Unable to look at Mahes, Dana shook her head. “She passed away six years ago. She had cancer. Once the doctors diagnosed her, she only lived a couple months after that. I still miss her."

"I'm sorry. Do you have any other family?"

"No. I come from a long line of women who only have one child, and the child is usually a girl."

"You're all alone in the world then."

Dana looked back up at Mahes and shrugged. “It's something I've gotten used to. Feeling bad about it isn't going to make it any different. I don't mind being alone."

"As long as I'm here, you never will be alone."

Laying her head down on Mahes’ chest, she allowed him to wrap his arms around her. She could easily get used to him being around all the time. But she knew she had to tread carefully. After Mahes left, she would have to be on her own again. A small voice, buried deep inside, said it was already too late for that. She only hoped she was strong enough to give Mahes up when the time came.

  Chapter Six

They spent the majority of the day in bed, only surfacing long enough to eat. In between bouts of lovemaking, they talked about anything and everything. Dana had never experienced this type of male companionship. It was exhilarating to be able to say what was on her mind with no repercussions. She could be as silly as she to be wanted with Mahes. He was only too happy to join in. Dana even found naked pillow fighting to be highly arousing.

During the night they planned out their trip to Memphis. Mahes wanted to leave on the following Monday. That gave her all of the next day to pack and talk to her boss about having some time off work. Dana also brought up the subject of Mahes staying with her until they left, since she had forgotten to do so while at the mall. He had more than happily accepted her invitation and kissed her senseless afterwards.

It was going to be a long car drive for them. It was four hundred and eighty miles from Kansas City to Memphis. And apparently she would be doing all the driving since Mahes didn't have a driver's license and didn't know how to drive. She figured it was going to take them almost eight hours to reach Memphis. Dana had never been on a long road trip before. She had taken the train when she had moved to Memphis to start university. She was a little nervous about having to be the one to map out their trip, but she did have her laptop and she planned to save the route they would take on it.

The following morning, Dana got out of bed and quietly made her way to the shower. Even though it was late morning, she left Mahes to sleep. He had more than earned it. She couldn't quite manage to wipe the smile off her face as she thought of all the ways they had made love during the long night.

Slipping back into the bedroom, Dana pulled on some clothes as silently as possible. On the way out of the room, she picked up the scroll Ellie had sent her, and softly closed the door behind her. Putting the scroll down on the coffee table, she picked up the phone and called her boss. As she had predicted, Sally was more than willing to give her a couple weeks off work. Before Dana hung up, Sally had even suggested she take a third week off as well. Dana shot her down on that one. The two weeks would be long enough to be away.

Mentally ticking that chore off her list, she sat back on the couch and stared at the cylinder that held the scroll. She couldn't shake the feeling that it was something more than what Ellie was saying it was. Even though both Ellie, and then Mahes, had told her to leave the scroll untouched, Dana's gut was telling her she needed to know exactly what she had gotten herself into by agreeing to look after it.

Before she could talk herself out of it, Dana picked up the cylinder and carefully withdrew the scroll. Just like the first time she had touched it, a tingling sensation shot through her skin. Gently taking hold of the edge of the scroll, she prepared to open it. One minute she was about to open it, and the next, the scroll was no longer in her hands.

In shock, she looked up to find Mahes before her, holding the scroll out of her reach. She gasped at what she saw. It wasn't his nakedness that she found disturbing, it was his eyes. His eyes were no longer their usual color. They were now gold, but that wasn't the only thing that had changed about them. His pupils were mere slits, giving them a cat-like appearance.

"I told you not to open the scroll.” Mahes didn't raise his voice, but Dana could hear the suppressed anger in his tone.

  "Mahes, your eyes."

He ignored what she said. “I told you not to open the scroll,” he sa
id again. “You don't know what you are dealing with. It was never meant for mortal eyes."

"What are you talking about?” A shiver of fear ran down her spine as Mahes growled in the back of his throat. It sounded like a growl a large cat would make.

"You will never look at the book again. If you do, you will suffer the consequences for your actions."

Dana couldn't shake the feeling that Mahes would be the one to mete out the punishment. Right now, the way he looked, she believed him capable of it. “Calm down, Mahes. I promise never to look at the scroll, I mean the book, again."

Mahes glared down at her for a few seconds, letting his cat eyes bore into her, before he nodded. Picking up the cylinder, he put the book back inside it. “I can't wait any longer. We'll leave for Memphis today, the sooner the better. You'll only be tempted to do what you shouldn't the longer we wait."

Not feeling comfortable having to look up at Mahes from her position on the couch, Dana stood up. “I'm starting to think I may have made a mistake agreeing to go to Memphis with you. If you really feel as if you have to leave today, I don't mind taking you to the bus station."

"No. You have to come with me, along with the book."

"I don't understand what's happening here, Mahes. Your eyes are normal one minute, and the next, they change color and shape. I think I would have to be insane to even think of spending almost eight hours stuck in a car with you. It's a little creepy."

Mahes took a step toward her. He narrowed his eyes at her when she took a step back. “You should have listened to me when I told you to leave the book alone. If you were to read from it..."

Dana put up her hand. “Would you stop lecturing me about the damn book for a minute? I get it. You don't want me to go near it. Fine, but that doesn't give you the right to take something that doesn't belong to you. Ellie will want that back. And will you at least tell me what the hell is happening to you?” Her voice grew louder as she spoke and she ended up yelling the last part.
